The Bulldog decal scheme is quite complex, and the lower wing has to have the decals applied before a lot of the fixings (including the undercarriage) are added.

The Model Alliance decal sheet only gives the codes, so I've used Xtradecal Interwar RAF roundels.

Image

Image

I've also added one or two of the upper wing parts, but not the gunsight or windscreen - as I thought they might break off during the decalling process!

Image

The decals should probably be pushed slightly more to the wingtips, but then some of the locating holes for underwing accessories would be covered by the decals, and I hate punching holes in perfectly good decals!

Image

Once these have dried, I can think about adding the fuselage decals.

cheers

I haven't been around much myself recently, but I don't know how I managed to miss your return..... Welcome back, mate.

I highly recommend this kit, especially if you are nervous about biplanes, because the upper wing goes on a treat without any need for jigs etc.
Very nice job there! I agree with your sentiments about the kit - it's going back a while since I built mine but I do remember it going together with almost no fuss whatsoever.

The upper wing went on reasonably easily (although one outer strut broke and had to be repaired). Location of the rear cabane struts is tricky, but the rest aligns surprisingly well.

The engine is moulded in three pieces, and when assembled will push fit onto the front of the fuselage. To paint it, I primed with dark grey, then dry-brushed with aluminium, then misted it over with Vallejo Air Light Rust.

I also added the radiator and bomb-racks on the lower wing.

Time for a bit of rigging.

Some rigging added. A couple of lines are missing between the wings, which may get added later. Upper wing decals added.

Image

The Xtradecal roundel blue and the Model Alliance checkerboard blue don't quite match

Image

Snag encountered: the blue checkerboards on the tail don't have the white parts on the decal - you are supposed to paint the tail white , then apply the decal over the white paint. I missed this, because I just glanced at the fuselage side and upper wing checkerboard decals , which DO have white in them.

The Bulldog is one of my favourite kits, I recall building it when it first came out, just after I had the misfortune to having watched the last flying Bulldog crash at Farnborough in 1964.

I picked up a couple of the kits a couple of months ago going cheap on eBay, so its great to see how you build it.

I have another one, and more decals on the sheet for a second example.

The horizontal stabilisers on the Bulldog have now been sprayed white, but I will have to remask to paint the rudder. In the meantime, I've decided to tackle a Frog Supermarine S6b.

Image

An extremely simple kit.

Image

It takes only a few minutes to put together the extremely simple fuselage and float sections.

After these pictures were taken, I sprayed the seams with light grey to check out for any rough spots. There were rough spots
These have now been patched up on the main fuselage assembly, and this has been primed. The floats will need a wee bit more work.

Andrew, during the GB we had for the older tool Hurricane, I used a fair few parts from a LIDL ‘Hurricane’ to improve it - it was amazing how well they fitted.
