Tales from the Basement Lab by AndrewR

Post by AndrewR »

The story so far:

I've built some kits. I intend to build some more

Here's the first completion of 2014, a Hasegawa P47-D, finished as a P-47C, from the Secret Santa build:

Image

A very nice kit, all I've done is use brass tubing for the gun barrels, external stores left over from the Revell P-47D bubbletop build, and a Pavla vac-form canopy. A great way to start the new year!

Then there's another kit started last year, the venerable, nay geriatric, old tool Airfix Skyhawk. This one is just getting varnished. It's an A-4a assigned to VX-5, China Lake Naval Air Station in 1961-62. The decals are home made. The national insignia are from an Xtradecal set. Almost finished...

Image

Then there are seats and cockpits. The seats are resin ones by Pavla. They will go in a Matchbox Alphajet. The cockpits are from the Airfix Spitfire Vb kits, which I am building for a charity auction

Image

As time is at a premium at the moment, so I need to keep several small builds going at once. If I get the odd quarter of an hour free, then I can usually find a little job to complete on one or other of the builds.

Cheers

Thank you Nigel, and yes, today's modelling has been incident free. I've not even misplaced a canopy today :)

Spitfire building in the late afternoon:

Image

Interiors now green, primer on the pilots and props. I also got all the filters and intakes on under the wings.

Earlier on, I did some work on the Matchbox Alpha Jet. This has a negligible interior - two monstrous ejection seats and severely truncated moulded-in instrument panels, no side panels, joysticks etc.

Image

Here are the red seats with their Pavla replacements

Image

A few bits of plastic card and some primer...

Good start. Did you sort out your 'spectator' figures?

Yes I found some unpainted Preiser airport figures on Evil Bay at a tolerable price. Hopefully they'll turn up this week. :)

Some paint on our gallant Eagle Squadron Spitfire pilots:

And a few cosmetic paint touch-ups on the Skyhawk, followed by a little pastel powder weathering. Mostly the oil leak from the port side exhaust.

This one will be finished tomorrow.

Thanks Stuart. Unfortunately the sleep (or lack of) is now worse  The Skyhawk is best viewed from a distance, close up it's a bit rough! It's destined for the back of the shelf :-D

I've been there, it's not a nice situation to be in - I hope it gets better soon.

Looks good to me, but it can join my Tornado which is also a Back of the shelf job!

Spitfire pilots painted. I've done them as wearing RAF flying kit, but wearing US uniform underneath.

A new Basement Lab thread and some interesting stuff as always. I like the Skyhawk, it looks good from here (some 3000 miles away  ).
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

The Skyhawk turned out great. Nice job. I especially like the use of the oil pastels.

Strangely enough it's chalk pastels simulating the oil leak! :)

A whole ninety minutes in the lab results in two Spitfires.

Image

It's completely OOB at the moment, except for a little bit of photoetch at the rear of the cockpit and a transparent acetate reflector gunsight instead of the solid kit part.

I've used a bit of putty underneath on the intakes and radiators. But not a lot!

Detailing a Spitfire cockpit with a pilot in it, is an exercise in futility

And just to round off a very productive modelling day, I put the Alpha Jet fuselage together and push fitted the flight surfaces m

Image

I still need to add quite a lot to the cockpit, bulkheads instrument panels, hydraulics for the canopy mechanisms, but it's nice to see it largely as it will be displayed without even painting. :)

Image

If the coming week is anything like last week, I might not get any more bench time until Thursday.

Cheers
