Karaya's Hangar of What-if-ery and other curiosities

Post by Karaya »

In 1951 the RAAF signed a licence agreement to manufacture the F-86 Sabre. Combined with a Rolls-Royce Avon R.A.7 and serving from 1956 to 1971 it was considered by many to be the premier variant of F-86 breed.

However, it was also considered obsolete by many by the time the 1950's were drawing to a close so, in my opinion, persisting with such an aircraft into the 1970's was a mistake on behalf of the RAAF.

My little what-if will be that the RAAF persisted with the Gloster Meteors etc just a little longer and subsequently made the decision to employ the North American F-100 Super Sabre in 1957.

Now all I have to do is find a decent kit (an F-100D being the most likely candidate) and off we go.

Thankfully I have these decals left over from another project. I think they should look rather spiffing.

....and Yes they are actually in 1/72, not 1/48.

Anyone know if the 1/72 Tamiya F-100D is free of any major drama's. Being a What-if any inaccuracies can be explained away. As long as there are no major fit issue's I am not fussed.

I know not of the Tamiya, of which you speak. I do know of the Hasegawa, which is apparently relatively cheap and easy to get old of, especially in your neck of the woods.

Nice Bruce, very nice. I did see one going for relatively cheap on eBay. I'll grab that one. Thanks for the build links. Any and all information appreciated.

Karaya, Tamiya's F-100 is the Italeri kit. The only problem I know of is a spurious canopy frame which is easily polished out.

The Hasegawa kit is nice, but old. It has petite raised panel lines and practically no interior. It also offers different sized drop tanks than the Italeri kit. Both kits are correct. The Hun used several sized drop tanks.

Both kits are good. The Italeri kit is a little easier to build and is better detailed. It does seem a little chunky compared to the Hasegawa, but both build into fine models. Personally, I prefer both Hasegawa and Italeri to Trumpeter's Huns, mostly due to the engraved rivets festooned over the Trumpy.

This is one of those times that I'd buy by price. All three kits are good.
Really nothing pithy to say.

Well I've just managed to grab this fellow off eBay. Did look for the Hasagawa release but nothing in Australia at a reasonable price.

Found a good review at http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/G ... li/00.shtm which goes hand in hand with Merlins so hopefully should be prepared.

Obviously it is going to be sporting No.75 Sqdn markings though I am a little concerned about the black fuselage band not being big enough. Might have to mask and paint.

My Lord time has flown. Has it really been since 2011 that I last posted here. What on Earth has happened to the last 9 years?

Well, I for one am glad to be back and find that many of the old souls are still here on my favourite forum.

I've managed to find some space to re-enter this esteemed hobby but I have 9 years of rust to shake off.

I hope everyone is well during this age of COVID 19 and Donald Trump.

Looking forward to getting back into the styrene groove.

Welcome back, Sven. Careful how you clean the rust off, it might just become a new style of weathering :)
