Re: Mike W's workbench thread
OK...
This time a build for me! Not for a client, not for a magazine review, just for me. Makes a change!
Airfix 1/72 Fw190A-8.
It was fun, but I can't help feeling it could have been so much better.
I replaced the wheels with resin ones from Aires, shortened the main gear oleos and replaced the pitot and guns with brass tube from Albion Alloys.
Decals are from the kit with Fantasy Printshop swastikas on the tail.
Painted with Gunze and Tamiya acrylics, and final matt varnish is Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear.
Wash was done with artists oils and some Humbrol pigments were also used for some weathering for the undercarriage.
Most of all though it has reignited my passion for 1/72 scale.

Re: Mike W's workbench thread
This is my next build for Model Airplane International magazine.
It is a huge kit with LOTS of plastic inside the box...
I used the cockpit decals for the instruments, which worked perfectly, check out the side consoles especially...
This is where I am after a couple of weeks of evenings working on it, overall a pretty decent fit for the most part...

Love the FW not sure what your - could have been so much better - comment means, shortcomings of the kit? Anyways bringing your quality finish down to the one true scale makes for one sweet model.

Thank you...
re:could have been so much better
The little list of niggles on this build was quite long:
Moulded extended oleos, had to modify
Awful wheels, had to replace
Awful guns and pitot, had to replace
Inspection panel moulded on both sides of tail, had to fill the stbd side
Fit of panels around the upper guns and cowling was fair to middlin', needed LOTS of fettling and putty
No spinner spiral decal
Very thick trailing edges

Re: Mike W's workbench thread
That MiG-31 looks the business Mike and has wonderful cockpit detail. I'm also impressed with your build of the Airfix new tool FW-190 A-8 and, as I have one in the stash, it's also useful to know the weak areas of the kit!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: Mike W's workbench thread
Thank you chaps!
and ....that is the Hobbyboss 1/48 MiG-31 Foxhound finished then...
Straight from the box apart from resin replacement wheels from Twomikes as the kit supplied ones are those awful rubber tyres with plastic hubs. Main paint is MRP and Gunze and the weathering was done using Ammo of Mig Panel Line Washes along side some artists oils. Full build description coming to a future edition of Model Airplane International magazine, but overall a reasonably satisfying build.

My goodness that looks great Mike. I can never seem to get them looking as good as that, so I've still got something to aim for as a modeller then!

Re: Mike W's workbench thread
Tamiya 1/35 German Horch 1a
Bit of a change of direction for me with this.
I picked it up from a fellow club member before Christmas and have been building it as my model club build, so it's going to be a slow burner I think.
Also this will be a bit of a leaving curve for me too, as the figures are already causing me issues with their fit problems, as I've only started one of the five!
The build so far though has been absolutely faultless, typically Tamiya ...as in it is simple and detailed without too many parts.
I will be finishing it as per the box art, in the desert and green camouflage pattern.
The gun was a little dream to assemble, it even elevates.... working feature. I have drilled out the gun barrelto make it look a little better.
This is proving to be a little bit of fun so far
