Buccaneer S.1: From the Cockpit 6
By Michael J. Doust

The Buccaneer matured into what was arguably the best strike aircraft of its generation, but the early S.1 model was a little problematic in some respects. Underpowered and with some dodgy ancillary systems, the S.1 was a challenge for its crews. This title in Ad Hoc’s “From The Cockpit” series is a fascinating look into the trials and tribulations of the crews from a first hand perspective. Much of the book is made up of personal recollections of the type, warts and all, and this gives an unparalleled appreciation of the skill of the Fleet Air Arm during the sixties.

Michael Doust is ideal as the author of this book, being one of the first pilots to convert to the Buccaneer and later an Instructor on it. He writes lucidly and understatedly, and with an authority that comes from vast experience of the subject. The text is accompanied by a superb collection of photographs, many from private collections and never before published; there is much here for the super-detailer. Also included are four pages of colour profile paintings by Roger Chesneau, depicting the full range of S.1 markings.

As there has been precious little published on the S.1, this book fills a large gap for the enthusiast. It should be said that this is not a modelers’ book per se; it is above all an aviation history book. Nevertheless, there is much here to interest the modeler and it will prove priceless to those buying the CMR kit, or those hardy souls who are contemplating back-converting one or other of the older Buccaneer kits. The photos alone are worth the price, and coupled with a well-written text, this makes for a book of immense value. Having completed a Buccaneer model (and with more on the way, including an S.1 conversion…), I know that good references are very scarce; I can thoroughly recommend this book.
