New Modelling Magazines!

Post by PaulBradley »

I'm pleased to be a contributor to a brand new pair of modelling magazines from a brand new company, Phoenix Scale Publications! There will be two new mags - Phoenix Aviation Modelling for the aviation modeller, and Phoenix Scale Modelling appealing to the general modeller. The launch will be at Scale Model World this coming weekend, and details on how to order will be available shortly. I'm excited to be part of this new venture!

Oooooh! I hope it's a success Paul. It's a tough market and I hope they can distinguish themselves from the established players.

Just tried to find some background info, there's not a lot there. Are the directors from the modelling or publishing world. It would be great if they succeeded.

The company is just starting and their website will become active from the weekend. They will be at SMW this weekend where more details and the first paper issues will be available. Let me quote from David Francis, who is one of the founders of the new company:

"So let me tell you a little about us and the rather unique set up of our new company in case you are not aware of the background.

"We are a partnership of four people whose combined experience equals over 100-years working in both the Aviation and Modelling Press. After so many years working for others, we have come together as equal partners in this new venture each bringing their own unique talents.

"On the modelling side, we have Andy Evans who as well as being a published author of over 60 aviation and modelling books. During his 40-year career, he has also been editor of five magazines.

"David Francis is a IPMS UK and Belgium Nationals Gold Winning Modeller (Though he freely admits there were only 3 models in his class that year at Telford!) and he has edited one of the world’s bestselling magazines for five years. Before this, his work has featured in numerous aviation and modelling books and magazines for the last 35 years.

"Andy Folds and Jon Phillips are not modellers but are an important part of the team as without them you would not have any magazines to read.

"Andy Folds has been involved in producing a wide range of titles over the last 26 years including the Easy Jet magazine and one concentrating on the world of Formula One racing as well as numerous modelling titles.

"Jon has 26-years’ experience in the print industry and is responsible for the website and company IT, studio photography and layout concepts.

"The core principles of our new company will be Value, Honesty, Service ."

You will undoubtably recognise the names from the model publishing world.

I think they will be a good fit for the market. All the current magazines have their strengths and weaknesses, so I feel there's always a place for a well-produced and interesting magazine.

The directors' credentials look good so hopefully it will be a quality product.

Will there be a virtual edition or will it be paper based only do you know Paul?
Best wishes

Yes, congrats as I know you really like to do this and I’m happy you were able to find a slot with them and wish you and the venture success.

I echo iggie’s question - maybe more to the publisher yhan you, about a ‘virtual’ edition because I am done killing trees particularly as too much content, IMO, is focused on “weathering” - FWIW.

I understand that a digital version will be available shortly - I'll update as I get more info. There will be a stand at Telford and more news then.

And I agree that there are far too many articles in magazines nowadays that are less about building the model than with the author showing us how clever he is at weathering........

All to be determined, Mike. I've given them contact details to check with, but nothing definite yet.

Looks very shiny!

they should drop the www. from their website url, in internet terms it's use is archaic. - maybe readers don't think .co.uk as a website domain.

and don't confuse it with https://www.phoenixscales.co.uk/ (genuine site)
