Classic British Kit Fairey Swordfish Chat
Re: Classic British Kit Fairey Swordfish Chat
I want to be in, but times are a little trying right now. I'm going to spend some of Canada day working and some working on the 'fish. If I get a start over the long weekend I'm golden. If not, I'm in big trouble...the first couple weeks of July are going to be brutal with my business partner out of town and some traveling.

Do we have a Swordfish build without a Bismarck attacker? Hum...if I'm going to do one Matchbox Swordfish...how much trouble would it be to do two? RCN and Terry Goddard's Bismarck bird...hum...

Gents,
Many thanks in advance for showing me how to make a decent job out of the CBK Swordfish kits out there (and I have at least one each of the M'box, Airfix & FROG examples in my stash, so this will all be good stuff). I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys do with them over the next month.
Can't find the smily of the chap eating popcorn, but you get the idea.
regards,
Martin

Yes I do! However, I made a life choice not to take part as I will be in the Anti-shipping GB in August and between now and then I have to finish off my Italeri Invader filler-fest and try to cross-kit an Airfix Spitfire IX and XIX to make a XIVc and PRX (or XI, I haven't decided).
Starting too many just dilutes my limited modelling time too much and things either get rushed or not finished.
However, I'm with y'all in spirit. Have fun!!!
regards,
Martin

The Stringbag is a favourite, I think it stems from one of my first Commando comics...
then reading about the real exploits... even more amazing than the comics

Tamiya says interior green for the framework, tan (linen, I presume) for the fabric interior and aluminium for the cockpit floor.

The fabric isn't painted on the inside. Freshly applied fabric is treated with red shrinking dope. This soaks through the fabric in an irregular manner, so you get a pinkish streaked effect. This is what it looks like:PaulBradley wrote:Tamiya says interior green for the framework, tan (linen, I presume) for the fabric interior and aluminium for the cockpit floor.
An interesting challenge to replicate in a model!

Fabric should be red dope,

There's always room for improvement...... and I got plenty of space to fill
Re: Classic British Kit Fairey Swordfish Chat
I was wondering about that too. Looking at a few of the larger scale Swordfish builds on other modelling sites it seems red/reddish/tan is popular for internal fabric areas. But, at 1/72nd you'd need a powerful torch and magnifying glass to even get a hint it's there. So I'm not going to bother, good old Humbrol 78 for the internal sides will do for meBrews wrote:Quick Question:

Linen (light tan, khaki drill, whatever) base coat; then a heavily-thinned red/brown brush coat ought to do it, I would think. Near enough for government work, any way.peebeep wrote:

Thanks PB for that picture. It was my next question.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale
Re: Classic British Kit Fairey Swordfish Chat
The Beaufighter, contrary to many boxart illustrations, would carry either torpedo or rockets and not both.
What is the situation with the Stringbag? Both, or one or the other?
Regards,
Bruce

I am having a ball so far. Lots of good old fashioned model building. The only actual new technique this time around will be using E-Z line.

I'm going to be away for a long weekend starting tonight, so there's be no progress from me for the next week or so.
