There's no trick -- you have to build the model which means study instructions, imagine alternate ways, test fit, do not believe everything you see iun the instructions, especially drawings that are supposed to be "full size". Sounds bad but they really are good, if you just take your time and build the model. Not to say that some aren't more effort than others. I can't comment on the Fokker.

Yes, I have one of those also .... I happen to be onbe of those who really like Classic Airframes kits and hope they return soon.

They're certainly a challenge. I have their Fokker D XXI, and it absolutely horrifying. I would really like to build it someday, but I will need help, so if you have some CA tips, do share.

Now back to your regularly scheduled (and really swell looking) whirlwind :)

I'm back -- I've had some local commitments that have kept me away from bench and keyboard for several days.

Here's the Pavla cockpit assembled "my way", not theirs.

I have moved from here but have no pix and so will post more comments, not necessarily laudatory, tomorrow.

Hi John...

Stumbled across your thread whilst looking for a BFP for a real Whirlwind build…

I can correct you on a couple of detail mistakes that are continuely made time after time and still are with every new release… :frown:

The first are the two accumulators that are always the wrong size and position, I’m made a drawing to show you how it was…

This shows the correct position of the accumulators as shown in the Whirlwind AP…

This is the type:

Here’s how it should look…

The other is the Whirlwind Emergency Horn and Position, that is never shown…

This should help…

Here you can see the hinged access panel and the drilled holes for the Emergency Horn...

These have never been corrected before, so you will be the first... ;-)

Best of luck...

Uh, thanks, but there's nothing about this kit that leads me to do that much detailing ... I'll keep it in mind when I get around to my CA 1/48 scale kit ...

Here we are with wings, fuselage, and nacelles being glued ....

Image

I'm not impressed. I'll concede my hand fit cockpit may cause some fuselage join problems, but not the rest. One of the nacelle halves isn't like the other three, necessitating two gluing passes on one. The wings are a disaster -- the trailing edges have a major gap along them and no amount of sanding got it down and matching. This problem starts right at the tips and runs all the way around the back side. Unless I sand 'em down again they'll be super thick.

At this point in time, I'm willing to declare the newer Airfix kit the winner and move on .... The only thing Pavla really has going is the wing surface detail -- that is the fuel tanks ...

 Yikes, I've never seen so much clamping on a 1/72 scale kit before. Positively frightening.

Wasn't there some comment made once about how the typical reaction to early Pavla releases was "Hey cool, detail parts for my Airfix kit"?

Now I see why

Not me, I feel like a real wimp! :)

But John's efforts with this kit are inspiring. I think I would have given up.

Cheers
