Re: Splash's Spitfire Mk IX
what sort of pants do you use. Now thats a personal question.
I use Tamiya Acrylics thinned using their own thinners or surgical spirit if I can’t get their thinners (don’t use water they don’t like it) I thin it down to the consistency of skimmed milk (the healthy type that has no taste)
I have now added some decals and a coat of matt to see what the finnish will be like, I can see a couple of small bits of silvering on the roundels that will need sorting.
Next stage sort out the call sign masks, cockpit and canopy.
This also help to get the thin lines

Re: Splash's Spitfire Mk IX
When I did this kit the decals absolutely refused to come of the backing paper, did you find the same problem?

Tamiya acrylics are alcohol based (isopropyl alcohol aka propanol) and surgical spirits are a mixture of ethanol and methanol, so that's why they work well as pant thinners.

Oh! I wonder if I could sell the idea of Waffer thin pants on 'Dragons Den'?
What use could they be.

Tamiya pants work well with cellulose thinner too.
Would ya like to learn to fly? Would ya? Would you like to see me try?

I had the same problem the decals are hard to get off the paper and quite thick, not as good as the very latest decals from Airfix, I'm glad I did not use the invation stripe decals, as I think they might have been sod'sIrishAir wrote:When I did this kit the decals absolutely refused to come of the backing paper, did you find the same problem?

Now on short finales, only the call signs to mask and spray, add some red gun port covers and some weathering.

Re: Splash's Spitfire Mk IX
I have had success with the masking for the call signs, I printed the letters and then laminated them so that the mask would not stick to them.
I covered the letters with masking film and with a new blade cut out the letters (to make life simple I selected a call sign with no curves VFY )
The image shows the masks after I had used them, I’m happy with end the results but I think I should have used a slightly thiner font, all I have to do now is add the red gun port covers and paint the a/c serial number, as the model has deep panel lines I don’t think I will give it a wash as I think that would be to much.

Re: Splash's Spitfire Mk IX
No. 611 Squadron was among the first to take the new Spitfire Mk. IX into combat, receiving their new aircraft in July 1942.
BS451 represents the early production Mk. IX standard, with Merlin 61 engine, C-type wing and large cannon blisters. This aircraft had a long and successful operational career. It subsequently served with three Polish units, Nos. 315, 303 and 308 Squadrons in Northolt during 1943. In No. 303 it was flown by Sqn Ldr Jan “Kon” (Horse) Falkowski, carrying the markings RF-M. Overhauled and transferred to No. 229 Squadron in 1944, the aircraft survived the war and was sold to SAAF in 1947.
