Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead***finished***really****
Re: Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead
In the course of cleaning up the fuselage I noticed two thickly moulded panels just forward the turret, one on each side. Looking thru my references did not show anything like that protruding on the real aircraft. What is there are hatch covers with a couple quick release fasteners. I am assuming that the panels are covers for life raft tubes.
At any rate, they are sanded smooth and a little rivit detail added. That simple procedure really improved the overall look of the model.
It has been said many times over on this site that it is the little things that count when building up a kit.
I stated earlier that the clear pieces have dimples in them. A common issue with earlier Airfix releases. The windows fit in very well to their locations. A little rubbing down with various grits and a finishing coat of Future removed the dimples and really made a difference. Two windows however had the dimple image clear thru the piece but at least is is smooth on the surface.
There are a couple of scratches to remove and than off to the paint shop a mere three feet away.

Ooh, I'm glad you spotted those. I'm not sure I would have noticed them.jssel wrote:In the course of cleaning up the fuselage I noticed two thickly moulded panels just forward the turret, one on each side. Looking thru my references did not show anything like that protruding on the real aircraft.

I'll have to look at my Academy kit to see if it has the same thing happening.

Looking good Jeff,
How do you add rivet details?

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?
Re: Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead
I used a micro drill bit and just drilled a few holes in the correct position (one in each corner). New technology meets old.

Thread disappeared again. Turkey is in the paint shop and drying.

Re: Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead
Just noticed that my thread had slipped to near bottom and I do have a short report.
The Turkey is out of the paint shop now. Normally I would have masked up the clear parts prior to painting but the canopy is not setting quite right on the fuselage. The fault seems to be in the windshield area and a little filing shold do the trick.
Besides, that is what a 12/0 hairy stick is for.

Nice work on the paint job. In the end what colors did you use?

Re: Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead
I used Polly Scale Viet Nam camo grey for the white undersurface. Prefer that over white and on the top PS Dark Gull Grey. Masked with Blue Tac and card stock.

Jeff,
Nice going! I wasn't aware any -3s appeared in the Atlantic camo. I'm definitely going to do one of my Airfix Avengers in that colour scheme, now!
regards,

That turkey's roasting fine, sweet looking stuffing and the extra specail gravy coating looks yum..

Re: Jssel's Turkey in a Roadstead
Have neglected this thread long enough.
This morning had me getting the decals in place. The stars and bars are from the Airfix sheet. They laid down pretty well considering the age. A few corners curled up but Future kept them down for good. The numbers are sourced from an equally old Scalemaster sheet of numbers and letters in US modex.
My issue with the canopy fit has been fixed so will be adding that probably tonight.

Only really seen one of these in the 3 tone blue scheme.
That scheme looks really smart and a really nice assembly job on what is not the best kit in the world.
Cheers

I was able to complete my TBM last night but SWMBO has taken the digital camera on her girls weekend camping trip. I should have pictures posted on Sunday afternoon USA time.

Now, Jeff, there's no reason to make up excuses like that . . .jssel wrote:I was able to complete my TBM last night but SWMBO has taken the digital camera on her girls weekend camping trip. I should have pictures posted on Sunday afternoon USA time.
