Post by Old_Tonto »

Name: Ian
Screen Name: Old_Tonto
Model: Blackburn Skua Mk. II
Scale: 1/72
Manufacturer: Octopus (Pavla)
Aftermarket addons: None but it comes with a vac form canopy and some hard cream coloured bits that I assume are resin. :???:

I am away in Scotland for the first week in August but I will take the kit with me and try to make a start.

I was at my LHS yesterday looking for the Academy Helldiver and what did I find but this.

Sometimes it seems like there is nothing my LHS doesn't have hidden somewhere on the shelves. Don't worry I didn't get it I was just surprised they had it. Look forward to seeing yours. 8-)

Dirk, just count yourself lucky that you still have a LHS.

I am off with the family to the remote wilds of Scotland in the morning so I may be offline for the week. I will try to make a start on the Skua and take some pics along the way.

Just got back from Sunny Scotland 8-)

The good weather kept me busy every day so I didn't get much done but I did make a start. Here is the kit:

Image
Quite a lot of flash & resin parts plus the dreaded vac canopy.

I did manage to make a start on the cockpit tub.

I will crack on with this tomorrow.

Finally managed to get some time on the Skua & slapped some paint on the interior, dry-brushed with a little silver then dirtied up for good measure.
Image

I wouldn't normally spend so much effort on the interior but the vac canopy is very clear.
Image

I still need to add a couple of roll bars and some pipework leading into the fuel tank. Also need to install the lewis gun.
Image

I am not sure on which paint scheme to do yet but I am leaning to this rather nice dull silver look. 8-)

Apparently this or something very similar was worn during the hunt for the Graf Spee. Alternatively the kit comes with decals for the attack on the French fleet. If I can find enough details I may be able to use the kit decals & some spares to do a plane involved in the sinking of the Koningsberg in Norway. All very fitting for an anti-shipping group build.

Anyone have a preference?

Ian,

That's good progress. Pavla kits have a bit of a reputation for fighting back. How are you finding it?

Really? I didn't know there was an aircraft carrier involved. Do you have more details?

Although the resin parts are very crisp & detailed they are not the best fit. I did a great paint job on the instrument panel only to find that it is too wide for the fuselage! So I had to sand away lots of nice detail.
Also I think the cockpit floor is too low although I followed the instructions closely. Time will tell.

Martin, the Royal & French Navies formed eight hunting groups in the Atlantic and one in the Indian Ocean to look for Admiral Graf Spee, totalling three battleships, two battlecruisers, four aircraft carriers (Ark Royal, Eagle, Hermes & the French carrier Bearn), plus 16 cruisers.

Ark Royal was part of Force K along with the Battle Cruiser Renown. She docked in Rio 4 days after the battle of the River Plate.

The internals are completed. I added roll bars made from a paper clip. :)
Image

As you can see the fuselage is together but it took some time as it fits where it touches. :???: I spent a lot of time doing glue, clamp - let that dry then repeat.
Image

It seems to have worked although I concentrated on aligning the fuselage top seam. It's all over the place at the bottom.
Image

And no I will not show you my bottom. :ha:
