Please don't tempt me with aftermarket stuff guys.... :ha:

Must resist - must resist - must resist - must resist..... LOL
They do look very nice tho..... and a prompt to build others from the set.

Will see how things stand with about a week to go - if I'm struggling for a solution, I may well be back to that link.

Some progress:

Most of the airframe is together, white and intermediate blue surfaces are painted, as are most of the smaller parts to add later.
Currently waiting for a coat of Klear' to dry - then will apply first coat of the darker blue upper.

Bomb bay and wheels (as well as some smaller parts) need some attention before final assembly - but it's getting there....

Must say, that canopy set is looking attractive, especially as it will do several more models in the future.

And I've had an idea for the dive flaps - I've found a good picture, and am gonna re-size to 1/72, and print.
Then laminate, and poke through the holes with a pin - MAY drill 'em a bit bigger - will see how they look.
I can always print and laminate a few sets, for experimentation purposes.
Fingers crossed.

If you kept the broken canopy, it is possible to glue it back together? If so, one option is to fill it with Milliput or plaster, sand down the panel lines, and make a master that you can pull a copy from.

Just pick up a little clear butrate sheet, wear some oven mitts, heat the sheet until it sags, and then pull it down over the master.

Sounds basic, but the 'Poor man's vacuform' is pretty effective. I've made many of nice canopies over the years using this technique.

BTW, the build is looking good!

Unfortunately it wasn't just broken, it was completely obliterated.
20+ pieces - and the biggest piece was mangled, twisted, and splintered

Anyhoo - while the first coat of dk. blue uppers was drying, I've sorted out a display stand - gonna try to make the top of the base look like open sea.
And don't ask what the curved steel support used to be... :ha:

The open sea with a Japanese ship on it, surely?!?

Or is this a new fishing technique?

Regards,
Bruce

(Looks like an old bra insert to me).

LOL - yeah, probably - just a wee one, a bit of forced perspective maybe.
Might have to break out the plasticine

The last I'll be doing, probably until monday....
My daughter gets married on saturday, and the rest of the week I'm gonna be far too busy to do any modelling - Sunday's a possibility, but I have the feeling I may be badly hungover
I've decided though, to order a canopy set from Hannants, so that will give it plenty of time to arrive.

Yesterday, I concentrated mostly on the stand.
My first idea was to cover the top surface with PVA glue, leave it to be almost dry, then stipple it - and when it dries clear, the blue-grey paint underneath (H96, RAF blue) should show through. With the shiny, clear, coating giving a watery look...

Image

That was the plan, but no matter how close to being dry I left the PVA, it still kept settling down almost smooth.

So - when that dried up, I did a similar thing with Squadron white putty - thin layer, then stippled with a small piece of sponge.
When dry, painted over with H96 RAF blue/grey, and highlighted by dry-brushing white - well, I say dry-brushing - it was more of a 'damp'-brushing. - Then finished with a few coats of Klear to give a wet, watery look.

Image

In between, I did extra coats of paint and Klear on the airframe and various small parts.
Most of yesterday was spent waiting for stuff to dry....

Anyhoo - this is the current state of play.
Things like the prop, aircrew, rear guns, pitot, etc aren't fixed yet - Decals etc to be first, tidying up the paintwork, and details such as exhausts, prop tips , etc..
Don't know about weathering - I've not really tackled weathering yet - might try a bit of exhaust staining, but don't hold me to that, LOL :-D
When I get back to it (after the weekend), first job is to tackle the dive-brakes, and hopefully new canopy set will have arrived.

Image

Image

Oh - and that blue on the uppers is just way too glossy to my eyes, so I'll be toning it down a bit when all is complete.
Either satin finish, or maybe matt the whole thing, then use Klear to get the finish I want.

Also toying with the idea of adding some radio gear behind the gunner, and if I have time, I'll try to make a small japanese carrier for the base.
