Dirk's Tamiya Water Line Series I-16 & I-58
Name: Dirk
Model: I-58 & I-16
Scale: 1/700
Manufacturer: Tamiya
Aftermarket addons: PE Railings if I can find where I put them.
After reading Merlin's sub threads I got the itch to do a sub(s) myself. So I pulled out this baby from the back of the stash. I built one a few years ago when I first got back into modeling. I almost forgot about these.
Here is a box shot (From the web. My son has taken control of my camera to do some Bionical Stop motion animation. I'll be damned if I'm going to stem his creativity )
If you haven't seen these before they are very cool. Lots of detail in a very small package and this one comes with two subs in the box.
Some of you might recognize the I-58. The I-58 was a Japanese B3 type cruiser submarine that served in the final year of World War II. Modified to carry Kaiten manned torpedoes, she damaged two enemy destroyers with them, but her most significant success was the USS Indianapolis, sunk with conventional torpedoes on 30 July 1945. The submarine surrendered in September 1945, and was later scuttled by the United States Navy.
The actual I-58
The torpedo room of the I-58
As for the I-16, the only thing I know about here at this time is that she was sunk by the USS England
Pictures to follow

Within about an hour the sub is basically assembled
It's kind of hard to see but I added PE ladders to the hull and to the conning tower
If you look closely you can see that I added PE railings to the sub. They can be seen better in the last photo

Looking good Dirk,
I am a big beliver in adding PE to maritime subjects it brings them alive and makes them appear more realistic. How are you going to display the model?
Justin
PE is almost a must with nautical subjects. It just makes the kit pop. This will most likely be placed on a base with the I-58 at some point. The problem is I've never done water before so who knows when it'll get done.

The I-16 is just about done except for weathering and a base
After looking at the photos here I'm not thrilled with how the tower fits on the deck.
The keel has been laid on the I-58

Filling the seem on the tower
The kit aircraft for this is pretty much a blob so I opted for these instead.
More to come
