Jeff's Halibag

Post by jssel »

I came so close to bowing out of this group build. Finally, selecting the Airfix Halifax as I have never built an Airfix "heavy" before. It was this, the Lancaster or the Stirling. Yesterday, after watching a TV show on the S.O.E. and the Belgian underground convinced me I needed a Halibag in the collection.

Boxart:

It is interesting that the price tag on the box was from WR Smith for 92p.

Innards:

Lots of flash. Two damaged airscrews but the blades were in the box. This one will be a real test which means loads of fun.

Come on Wednesday.

And thats the set :-D each major injection kit of the Halifax will be built in this GB. It's going to be very interesting to be able to compare them.

Started sorting out the kit this morning. I believe that the prep time will far outweigh the build time.

Here are the props:

The trailing edges of the wings will need some work:

Some of the pieces with two halves are assembled:

All of this in preparation to step one:

Looking forward to the challenge. I have a great reference in Model Aircraft Magazine Vol 10 issue 11 where Ray Ball builds "the other heavy". It also has good line drawings and a walk around of "Friday the 13th." Let it be known that there will be things done to the kit but not to the same level as Mr Ball.

Nice start Jeff. That's some serious flash you have to contend with there, I cant even see one of those prop blades

I had but never finished this kit back in the 70's. I think you have a point re the prep time!

Some serious flash there Jeff, looking at the instruction picture it seems Airfix got it right with the flight engineer in the standing position,ie he had no seat. The new tool Revell im building has a seat for the engineer  which i will have to look at removing,1 point to the Airfix

I have read that the flight engineer would set on bails of tinsel (Window) until they were dumped out.

I don't see anything really hard with this kit, just tedious work removing flash. Feeling now like the surface detail will be removed during the seam clean up. We'll shall see.

It's a very long time since I built one of these and the only thing I remember was the canopy was a pig of a fit. I have two of these in the stash and am looking forward to watching you're build.
Just a thought, if this had any more flash it would look more like a vacform.

All the best.

Things are progressing well. Most of the parts are cleaned up so the actual building can commence. I have poly bags marked Port and Starboard to keep the parts separated and not get mixed up. This afternoon included some interior green sprayed on. The fuselage halves were taped together and the seam lines observed for future attention.

Classic boxing of a plastic kit. I think that the idea of all the flash is that you cut it off, dissolve it in liquid cement and use it as filler!!

Looks good with the first paint already applied.

Looking good Jeff, im missing rivets for some strange reason  i used to think they were detail and as such made an Airfix kit better than anything else.

No pictures but an update none the less. Today I mixed up some Milliput and filled the gaps in the wings where the ailerons slot in. Terrible fit as they were movable parts.

Here is the results of the Milliput work. If nothing more, it improves the airfoil shape across the wing which is a great plus. Dry fit the fuselage again today with the internal parts. There is a cockpit bulkhead that will need some rubbing down the the nose fits tightly. Overall, the fuselage fits nicely together.

Engine nacelles are glued together and setting up.

I think things will move along better now.
