applied with mops in the real world, but i am using a small italeri brush..

Yes, as far as my limited skills allow me...

I don't know if it's any help or not but when I did my Female tank, I liberally plastered the tracks with filler. When it was dry I just slapped on loads of browns & black. Once dry, several coats of Klear to get that wet mud look.

You could do something similar around the wheels & tracks and the lower sections of the armour?
