Brews wrote:Weathering in a submarine environment is different to weathering in a subaerial environment. Things attach themselves and grow. Barnacles, algae, seaweeds. That's where copper is useful, because it oxidises to form copper salts, which are poisonous to marine life. The glass, otoh, is not. Cloudy might be the effect you want if you are going to have a weathered hull.
Sorry, I didn't spend all that time on the interior & light to have it not visible !!! It is sci-fi so I can create whatever universe, science, metallurgy, bend whatever rules, etc, I want ...

Today's progress. You'll note two levers in the cockpit, a periscope, a painted hatch, with wheel for opening it. There are other paint patches, etc. Also seen are the 2 sets of fins, ready to be attached tomorrow. I also have a couple red valves to attach on the drive mechanism underneath. And that's it ....

Image

Ooops, the "eyes". I carefully cut the glass from one of them today, took a couple hours of carefully scribing 'round & 'round to get it out without shattering the whole thing. I cleaned that up with sandpaper and have cut two nice pieces of 10-thou clear sheet to use as glass, just about got them trimmed to fit inside the "eye socket". I have one more eye to cut the glass from -- that'll be tomorrow.

Oh, yes, also finding the right paint to touch up the black fins -- it was rattle can and I might just spray some into a jar ...

If I could just keep from knocking fins off I suspect I'll have a finished fish but with some paint & glue still drying when time runs down ....

That's going to look really striking when finished.

OK, looking for Bruce to be lenient here.
If you imagine there is glass in the eyes and that the eyes are glued on, then it is DONE.

I didn't like my first "glass", and scratched it badly fitting it, so I cut new pieces. Problem is as I noted in my last post, drying glue and paint. I need to mount the glass in the eyes and the eyes in the head tomorrow, try to avoid knocking anything off and then I can take some real glamor shots, to include something darkish with the light on ....

Some details ....

Why I spent so much time fiddling with the light .... Ignore the light leakage around the head, I have a plan to fix that later.

Image

Image

In the "natural" element .... I'll do a better representation later, but again why I spent so much time with the light ...

There are things I could have done better but overall I'm quite happy with it. When I get to fixing the light leak, weathering it, and adding a better base, I'll open a thread in the Sci-Fi- Modelling forum ....

I am quite glad we had this GB (and that I found a suitable subject) because it took me out of my comfort zone, and will do so even more when I get to weathering .... Thanks, Bruce !!! and everyone else for the encouragement and suggestions along the way !!!

Super work John. I look forward to seeing it weathered which will help break up all that copper, but even now it looks quite remarkable and the light is a triumph.
