Pearl Harbor Sign-up and Chat

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

A continuation of the initial 'Pearl Harbor' thread from GB Chat.

Here sign-up for the 'Pearl Harbor' GB, state your entry, chat with others who are joining the GB.

Although this started as a aircraft build, it expanded to any air, sea, ground item involved in Pearl Harbor.

Your GB Leader is Dirk Pitt, who will post the details/clarifications here shortly ....

I have the Hasegawa 1:72 Kate Torpedo Bomber which I had originally purchased for the Anti-Shipping Group build but never arrived in time.

As your host I would like to Welcome all of you to the Pearl Harbor (This is no Drill) group build.

As much as I love the idea of this GB I was not the originator therefore I have almost no rules for it. All I ask for is that when you start your build thread to start with the following header and a box shot of your kit. The header helps us all know what kit, scale etc and of course I like to see the box art. If you are not comfortable posting your real name please don't feel pressured. Leave it blank

User Name:
First Name:
manufacture:
Scale:
Model Type:
After Market Items:

If my memory servers me correctly this was not limited to just aircraft so ships and other items that were at Perl that fateful day are welcome. Not being a ship builder I leave the subjects up to the individuals to decide if it works or not. I just hope there is enough time in the build for anyone that decides to go with a ship can finish. Also if you armor guys know of any armor that was present at the time of the attack, go for it. The more the merrier.

As for the aircraft side, I hope the following helps. ;-)

Types would have to be in service and at pearl, would include some of the following:

Imperial Japanese navy
Mitsuibishi A6M2 Zero (has to be the A2)
Kate torpedo bomber
Val dive bomber
Jake float plane (these were on the Japanese cruisers)
Rufe float plane (these were on the Japanese cruisers)

US Army Air Corp
P-36A Mohawk
P-40 B/C Warhawk
B-17 C/D Flying fortress
B-18 medium bomber

US Navy
F4F-3 Wildcat
SBD Dauntless dive bomber
Soc 3 Seagull float plane
Kingfisher float plane
PBY Catalina flying boat

Some helpful info for chosing a US subject for this build.

Army airforce types and numbers on oahu, December 7th 1941:

Heavy bombers:
B-17D Flying fortress; amount: 12

Medium and light bombers:
B-12; amount: 3
B-18, amount: 32
A-12; amount: 3
A-20 Havok; amount: 12

Fighters and interceptors:
Curtis P40 b/c; amount: 99
Curtis P-36 Mohawk; amount: 39
P-26 peashooter; amount 14

Source: At dawn we slept p366

Of course I have no trouble amending the list as needed. I look forward to seeing everyone soon

Regards
.... Dirk

Didn't know this was running. If I can acquire an Airfix P-40, I want to build one of the Pearl Harbor birds that got a kill.

Things don't get started till November 1st, so you have some time to dig up one of them P-40's or something else that fits. There's plenty to choose from. ;-)

Neither the P-40 nor the P-40/Zero Dogfight Double are available here yet and not even announced on the Airfix USA site.

Maybe ask one if one of our UK members could acquire/ship one to you.

That would be the perfect build for this GB. A nice dogfight scene

Bates has one he got from England and he offered it to me, but I don't want to deprive him of it. If someone in old Blighty will send me the new P-40B kit, I'll be happy to pay for the kit and postage. PM me.

Some timing! :frown:

I'm already a good way through a Fujimi 1/48th Zero to be completed as a Pearl Harbour raider from the Shokaku.

I've also nearly completed a "Rufe" float plane. A note on these aircraft for Dirk is that, according to my reference (Japanese Aircraft of World War II, Basil Collier, Sidgewick & Jackson, 1979), they didn't enter service until a few months after Pearl Harbour and were first used at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Maybe you're thinking of the older "Alf" or, possibly "Pete" biplanes.

My entry for this GB will be a Hasegawa Kawanishi Type 94 "Alf", mounted on it's catapult.

These were used on the HIJMS Tone, a heavy cruiser sailing with IJN 8th Cruiser Division, part of the Pearl Harbour Support Force.

Back when I was looking for something for this GB I saw this as a possibility but was shot down my the then founder as this was NOT flown during the actual attack on Perl Harbor. Like I said in my opening post for this seeing as it was not my brainchild I'm open to just about anything as long as no one else has any objections.

I think that if the definition is "participated in the Pearl Harbor attack" we're fine, as that would include support forces ....
