OT's Dogfighting Duo ***Done***
I will be late starting this one but I already have the kits on order and the workbench will be cleared so after Telford it's all systems go. I will be building the new tool Airfix P-40 & Zero. Hopefully in flight if I can get the hang of prop blurs.
The kits can be found here:
http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/n ... 5/gallery/
http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/n ... 3/gallery/
The P-40 will be that flown by Lt. Ken Taylor Pearl Harbour 1941:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_M. ... arl_Harbor
Shooting up a Zero - I need to source some markings for this so can't say which plane yet.
I did try to find a Spitfire used at Pearl, honest.

All kidding aside I look forward to seeing your build. I plan on getting this kit once it works its way to the states. I hope it lives up to the hype and excitement that it seems to be generating around the Internet

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
Back from Telford with the neccessary kits (but not the decals ).
I didn't fancy paying the extra and buying the box set just for the decals.
I have started this lunchtime.
I still need to decide if I want to do them in flight or wheels down.
I guess I had better start thinking about individual aircraft markings too.
I must say I am very impressed with these new Airfix kits, the panel lines are much better than on the Hurricane.

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
I started mine a couple of hours ago and I'm nearly done with the cockpits (progress report later). As for the detail, aren't they gorgeous. These have to be the best Airfix kits I've ever seen.

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
You have to love these new Airfix kits. The Zero is just falling together.
Cockpit is very good & fits well.
The body & wings are a great fit too.
I only used a little filler on the tail.
I don't have the correct Humbrol paint so used a Tamiya equivalent, XF-12 IJN Grey. It looked a little dark to me but then I compared it to
the profile in SAM Combat Colours 4 it looks pretty close.
This book is a great reference if like me you don't have any info on Pearl.

I have cracked on with the P-40 too although the fit is not as good IMHO, here they are together.
There is a gap at the wing to fuselage joint but nothing a little filler won't fix, and at half the price of the Trumpeter kit it is great value.
I am really enjoying these two and learning loads about the early war in the Pacific.

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
I did paint mine in Humbrol 90 but, comparing it to the Zero and Rufe sitting part done next to the workbench, there is a significant shade difference between the two colours.Old_Tonto wrote:

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
Making slow progress on this one as I am decorating at the moment.
This is where I am up to, just working on the stand:
P-40 racing down the runway at Wheelers Field with a Zero closing in.
Did Wheelers Field have a concrete runway or was it just a field?
I am currently working on the canopies and making some decals for the Zeke.
I am not happy with the colour on the P-40. It may get a top coat of Tamiya XF-51.
Better get a move on.

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
Good work OT, I'm not sure but I think Wheeler had a concrete runway.
Cheers,

Re: OT's Dogfighting Duo
Judging by these photos I'd say Wheeler field was a field...
