Re: Martin's Tiger Force Tempest
I didn't get as far as I'd have liked this evening so no picture. Progress involves beginning to paint rather fetching ident blue recognition stripes on the beast . . .

OK, masking removed. Still some greeblies to clean up, but you get the idea. Humbrol 104 Oxford blue seems not a bad surrogate for roundel blue.
Now, Okinawa based markings (BPF roundels) or Burma based (SEAC) . . . . ?

Martin

Chaps,
I have to agree. It just looks right. Of course the attractive colour scheme doesn't exactly reduce its appeal either!

OK, here's the status on 'Bee' Beamont's personal Tempest II, based on Iwo Jima in late '45. It has the recognition markings pioneered by the BPF in standard positions, with the exception that the fuselage roundel has reverted to the smaller type, the use of which was discontinued with the BPF somewhat earlier. Even so, the size of the fuselage markings required groundcrew to get creative with placement of serials and codes on the fuselage.
'Bee' Beamont's aircraft carried his personal initials and a Wing Commander's pennant as was his right.
Tiger Force's Tempest IIs were initially painted overall high speed silver to counteract airframe heating, but concern was raised by pilots that they were just too visible from below when conducting medium level bomber escort, so the undersides were given a hurried coat of azure blue. Ident blue recognition stripes were also carried in standard positions.
Edited with slightly clearer pics.

It doesn't half look like a Jug in that paint scheme.

Now you mention it, there's definitely a similarity! I guess that's another good reason not to use the SEAC markings in the end.Brickie wrote:It doesn't half look like a Jug in that paint scheme.

Oh, I didn't mean it as a bad thing. I like the old Thunderbolt.

Stripes were meant to be Roundel Blue. I used Humbrol 104, Oxford Blue, which seems to match the roundels quite well. The wing root walkways were Academy decals from their Tempest V and are very glossy. I will go over them with Revell 09 Anthracite to dull them down and make them less - erm - black.Brews wrote:Speaking of the stripes, what colour did you use for those. They're distinctly different from the wing root walkways.
