Jeff's Me(P)1101***Finished***

Post by jssel »

User Name: Jssel
First Name: Jeff
Manufacture: DML/Revell
Scale: 1:72
Model Type: Me(P)1101-Injection mould
After Market Items: None

Here is a bargain basement find at a recent contest/show. It is bagged with no instructions or decals or as I just found out, glass.

Brews scanned the instructions. Spares box has the Luft '46 stickers and looks to be an easy Vac-Form for the glass.

Sprue shot:

A little internal detail:

Seems the hardest part will be the landing gear assembly into the fuselage.

At any rate, I am off and running.

Sorry for the delay.

Progressing well with the build. Dainty little thing. DML plastic is very soft and it is easy to carve away to much plastic in some cases. Cleaning up mould lines on landing gear struts and the like requires more than your average light touch. Overall the fit is OK. I added some B-B's in the intake trunk to insure the nose would balance.

Image

I am surprised at the level of detail in this kit. The landing gear/engine bay is loaded. Unfortunately, most everything is covered up by the lower fuselage shroud. But we know it is in there, right?

Image

So I have given the final paint scheme some thought. When normally we build exact replicas of aircraft, we sort of breed out a certain amount of imagination. That is probably the main reason I shy away from what-if's. But I have been toying with this thought. We all know the color combinations on Luftwaffe aircraft. You know 74-75-76 or 81-82-83 etc. What if you did something like mixing the combinations. Gray-Violet with lets say Brown-Violet. Hold that thought please.

Now that would be interesting. Having the whole bay open would be easy to do.

The mainframe is together with some filler added. A word of caution here to anyone who may build this kit. The landing gear struts, bulkhead and engine takes a bit of an effort to align properly. If you do not get it right the whole aircraft will set out of plumb. I would recommend small bits of blu-tack to hold things while dry fitting everything into place.

Image

The tail sits low right now because to main wheels are not attached to the struts.

And as Brews suggests, how the main gear doors are attached will greatly effect ow much of the internal bay one can see.

Now that the Fdub D9 is done, I am back at this project. Today I cut out a rough piece of wood that will be shaped into the mould for a VacForm canopy. Also the main frame is about ready for the paintshop.

Sourcing out some decals also. When you buy cheap at a show, let the buyer beware.

Got some paint on today. I have changed my mind on the camo scheme after looking over the Luft46 site. I decided on a bare metal bottom and vertical stab with 81/82 uppers and light mottling on the side. Tail unit control surfaces will be 02 being parts shipped in from another factory.

Here is a rough draft.

The little wooden knob is the smash mould blank for the canopy.

@Brews: Yeah. Google images shows several pictures like that so I followed along.

Tried out a new technique today. I cut masks out out of tape and sprayed on the Balkenkruz. They are not professional by any means but I learned a bunch.

Mottled the fuselage sides with 81/82 and decaled the remains with stuff from the spares box.

Added an antenna to the fuselage spine. Now lets start with the canopy.

Dusted off the ol' Mattel "Vac-u-Form" this morning and went to work on moulding a canopy. I have run out of the Mattel(tm) clear sheets many years ago but have a constant supply of clear stock from the tops of greeting card boxes. I use another sheet act as a pattern to perforate the holes to hold the sheet in the brackets.

Here is the canopy carved from balsa, sealed and coated with about three coats of model airplane dope. I am sure that Alan Hall is smiling. I love retro modeling as it saves much scratch. Tamiya tape is used to represent the canopy frames. The canopy block is extra tall to allow for the plastic to settle down tight over the section that will be used.

Image

Here is the unit heating up with the block secured in place. It smells of roasting dust.

Image

It took three attempts to get a good copy. Most of the problem was from not waiting along enough to allow the plastic to heat properly.

Image

And after some careful trimming (it's not done yet) it is beginning to fit onto the fuselage. Most of the trimming now is to the rear of the part so it will fit the profile of the fuselage.

Image

None of this work is difficult to do but like the building of a kit in general, patience is the word.

Well, I'm calling this one done. Overall, I have learned a bit. New technique tried was masking stencils in lieu of decals. Have not vac-formed in a while either.

Here is the finished project along with a scale reference.
