Carlos' Revell Flitzer ***Finished***
User Name: Carlos
First Name: Karl
Manufacturer: Revell
Scale: 1/72
Model Type: Focke Wulf TL-Jäger 'Flitzer'
After Market Items: OOB (mostly) - might add some bits from thr spares box.
Starting a bit late due to other commitments - and have a couple of Mustangs to finish first (P-51B by Smer, and P-51D by Academy) - should be starting in 3 or 4 days, which will still leave most of December.
Kit is fairly basic - and I'll be building mostly OOB so things should be fairly straightforward (I might add a pilot, haven't decided whether to build 'in-flight' or not) and I might possibly add some external stores from the spares box - we know how the Germans liked to add bombs and such-like to fighters.
I also probably won't adhere too strictly to the paint-jobs and decals in the instructions - an operational Flitzer is 'whiffery' after all....
Anyhoo - the obligatory boxart and sprue shots.
For a basic kit, there looks to be some nice moulded detail and panel-lines.
Date embossed inside a wing part is 1996

Very nice looking kit and the first for this GB. I actually like the paint scheme on the box top. What scheme do you plan on doing?

Haven't fully made my mind up yet - probably won't be too different from the boxart, but I'm not confident of doing convincing mottling on something this small, and I do like 2-tone green 'splinter pattern.Dirkpitt289 wrote:Very nice looking kit and the first for this GB. I have no doubt you can pull it off.

Re: Carlos' OOB Revell Flitzer
Finally under way.
Got the interiors painted last night - and today have closed up the fuselage, plus a bit of plastic-surgery.
I'm gonna build this 'in action' on a small baseboard/stand - coming in to land.
So today have removed the control surfaces, so they can be positioned - and have had to raid the spares box for a pilot.
The cockpit turns out to be VERY tight for a standard 1/72 pilot - either the Flitzer was planned to be flown by children, or the kit is a tad under-scale.
In the 2nd picture you can see the pilot - I've had to sand his shoulders and arms down, so he'll fit - and have also had to remove the poor guy's buttocks, or I wouldn't have been able to fit the canopy.
For the interiors, I've gone a bit lighter than the RLM66 that Focke-Wulf usually used.
Went for a medium grey instead (Hu106 to be precise)
Anyhoo.... A coupla pics....
Only real issue so far (apart from tiny cockpit) - the nose had to be squeezed together quite tightly until the glue set - I assume the nosewheel bay was to blame for that.

Pilot surgery is often required. The thickness of the fuselage walls removes significant with and 1/72 pilots can be on the chunky size.

Re: Carlos' OOB Revell Flitzer
Not a great deal of progress since last post - and no pics yet.
Got the wings, and booms on - and have positioned the control surfaces for a landing (flaps down, and elevator up a bit to raise the nose) - and most of the rest of this is gonna be done between Xmas and New Year.
Been toying with an idea though - I might turn it into a night-fighter - Like the single-seat US night-fighters with a bulbous radar housing on one wing (Hellcat and Corsair spring to mind)
I've been sizing up an external fuel tank from a 1/72 Mossie, and it looks about the right size, and a good general shape. If I fit it directly in front of one of the booms, it'll just miss the u/c door - and I can maybe add a reciever antennae on the other wing.....
Just thinking aloud......

Re: Carlos' (almost) OOB Revell Flitzer
Been cracking on a bit the last coupla days - now Christmas is out of the way.
Yesterday's progress first...
I've decided to go with the idea of a radar pod on one wing, and recieving antanna on the other. Both bits are from an Airfix Mosquito - external fuel tank for the pod, and the nose antenna for the other wing - though I'll be straightening the antenna so they're at 90º instead of the 'arrow' shape.
A little carving, and the 'pod' is on...
A little filler, some sanding, and a coupla coats of homebrew RLM 76 (lightened Hu65) on the undserside...
And the first coat of the base upper colour I'm using.
All brush-painted BTW - For the uppers I'm going with a splinter-style two tone green - Olive drab and dark green (Hu155 & Hu149) , similar to the colour call-out in the instructions of Airfix's Ar-196.
(I like Luft '46 - you can avoid stippling, and take a few minor liberties with colour-schemes )

Re: Carlos' (almost) OOB Revell Flitzer
And today...
Second coat of Olive drab went on in the early hours last night, then a coat of 'Klear' this morning, and the first coat of Dark green.
The pilot is just a loose one I got from the spares box, and his oxygen mask is a tiny piece of blu-tack, painted brown.
Since that photo, I've painted the landing gear and various bits which can be added tomorrow.
Second coat of dark green went on a couple of hrs ago, and I've just given the whole thing a coat of 'klear'.
Another Klear coat to go, then I can have a decaling session later tonight.
Hopefully just touching up, and final matt coat tomorrow....
Oh! - and I need to sort something out for a stand.

It does look like it means business, doesn't it?kruaxi wrote:Seems very aggressive
Finally finished and mounted in a position that could be either taking off or landing.
Very late (or is that 'early'...?) here now though (5am) and I've not been to bed yet.
Pics tomorrow, when I eventually surface

Karl,
I like the way that's going! You may have inspired me to try a Mosquito tank in front of each boom, mounting 37mm anti-tank cannons!
regards,
Martin

That would've been a real demon by WW2 standards MartinMartin R wrote:... a Mosquito tank in front of each boom, mounting 37mm anti-tank cannons!
If you're mounting Mossie tanks, beware that if they're in line with the booms, you'll need to sand the inboard side of the tanks flat, to allow the u/c doors to open fully.

Re: Carlos' (almost) OOB Revell Flitzer
Done - and apologies in advance for the rubbish pictures - got camera woes at the moment.
Having to use a phone camera with no zoom, so it's struggling with small things like this.
Finished in a bit of a rush, paint on the base still not dry.
Hopefully it's supposed to look like it's landing.
All out of the box, apart from paint, glue, pilot, Swastikas from Techmod, and radar gear bits adapted from Airfix Mossie parts.
