Special Hobby Northrop N-3PB in 1/72

Post by Chuck Finley »

Special Hobby, along with Azur and MPM, have come a long way in both the quality of their kits and their unique subject matter. One of the latest kits to come out of special Hobby is the Northrop N-3PB, a float-plane patrol bomber that was delivered to the Norwegian armed forces after the German invasion and operated by free Norwegian forces under British control. The kit is well done and my biggest gripe is that the decals were misprinted with decal numbers printed on the decal itself. Other than that, I recommend this kit for the modeler interested in something different.

N-3PB, GS-FI22 (c/n 322), No. 330 (Norwegian) sqn, Akureyi bace, Iceland, October 1941. This machine was the longest serving N-3PB, it was kept on records from 27 March 1941 until 26 May 1956. It was destroyed in 1955, when a hangar roof collapsed under weight of heavy snow and was eventually written off a year later.

On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

I like that a lot. I don't think I've ever seen one built before. How did you do the panel line shading - the bottom of the floats looks very realistic.

Thanks and the panels were shaded with pastels.

Good job on this lesser known type. I wonder what changes are needed from the Northrop A-17 to make this aircraft.

Beautiful paint job.....the panel shading is almost sublime.
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

It was based on the export version of the A-17, I think a version with fixed gear, but was never intended to have floats so there had to have been other changes. I think this version had different fixed/flex guns & ordnance load also. Engine was different also, I think.

For you and your rescue Rareplanes kit, piece o' cake :)

Very nice work. I have one of these in the stash. Any problems during the build?

All the best.

Really great work Chuck, that looks excellent and features a really nice paint job. I've never heard of this type and it is a good looking seaplane IMHO.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.
