Consolidated P2Y Ranger; Contrail 1/72
Consolidated P2Y Ranger; Contrail 1/72
Just feel the pain on this one. It's the Contrail 1/72 vacform kit of the P2Y Ranger. Not the easiest of builds, very much helped by Barry who I' sure at this very moment, will be heading towards completing his build!
Let's not even think about the shade of yellow.

Looks just magnificent but, even completed so well, it looks a very intimidating build.
Congratulations!

It looks an ungainly brute but your build as ever is superb
Best wishes

Have to love the yellow and grey scheme. Great result!

There can be no doubt, it is a beautiful model. Looks like something odd between the engine's; though, the model as a whole is inspiring. Well done, indeed!

The plane itself looked good. Your model, as always looks amazing. I wish I had the courage and skill to tackle vacu-beasties like this one.
Re: Consolidated P2Y Ranger; Contrail 1/72
It looks in the photo as if the port engine cowling has dropped forward a tad and/or the prop may have drooped forward (only held in by pva) - I will look at it to see what has happened. Should be easy enough to correct.
Thanks for the positive comments. It was quite a tricky build.

Incredible build of a beautiful classic flying boat; I would never have the courage to tackle such a project, especially a vacform! Definitely worth the pain! So, what's next?

Re: Consolidated P2Y Ranger; Contrail 1/72
Another masterpiece. What a size for a vacuform though - I'll bet that one gave you some moments to remember.......
Re: Consolidated P2Y Ranger; Contrail 1/72
I have spared you the many moments that I would rather forget. A few of these moments would include; seeing that the leading edge of the wing was moulded to wrap around and therefore making the very old thin plastic very difficult to work with; seeing that the rib lines on the kit were engraved so I had to lay stretched sprue in every one of them (so they are probably standing up a bit too high in spite of sanding down); cutting the upper wing in three and resetting the outer sections at 3 degrees; getting the rounded ends of the lower stub wings to fit against the fuselage; cutting out the thick brittle hard canopy without splitting it; making most of the struts as few were provided in the kit; drilling through the top of the fuselage to fit the central supports only to discover that the bulkheads were immediately under the holes I was drilling; fitting the struts at such low angles and in places that were hard to get to; rigging it with florists' wire; giving up on the kit decals. Otherwise, it was a fairly standard build.

I bid on one of these, didn't win, think I'm much happier to let you do it
Great job, thanks for the mini build report, very helpful.

Wonderful! Not to mention you don't see many P2Y models posted online.
