Airfix 1/72 Curtiss Hawk 81a-2
One of my side projects, in amongst Biggles and Group Builds, is the Chinese aircraft of the Sino-Japanese war of the 1930-40s. The Flying Tigers Hawk fits into that theme as a nice OOB build.
Great kit. Love these new tool Airfixes.

Nice build and great theme. I dabble in that theme as well. Fascinating variety of types. As an experienced builder of KMT planes, what do you think of the light blue in the Chinese roundels? References and model companies still seem split on whether they were ever painted that color or its just an artifact of ortho film and maybe sun fading.
A good model is any model you can walk away from.

Re: Airfix 1/72 Curtiss Hawk 81a-2
This is only my 3rd KMT/CNAF build, so not too experienced. At any rate, I think the markings are erroneous and sun faded blue has been taken to be the original colour (which should actually be a lot darker). I just got lazy on this one and didn't print up new insignias
I was sick of having it unfinished and printing decals is always my biggest holdup.
I have a KMT Boeing Peashooter that is 80% complete and mainly just waiting on decals

Not an expert, but I gather the overwing color faded while underwing did not; take your choice on the sides ....

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Insignia colors aside, the decals look very good, especially the little "Hell's Angel" figure since the thin white outline is so often out of register. Nice looking P-40.

Excellent finished model!
Well done!
If I'd like to by picky I would say the national insignia should be slightly towards the wings tips. Besides that it is spot on!

Re: Airfix 1/72 Curtiss Hawk 81a-2
Thanks David. It doesn't look totally horrendous, I'll admit.
With the insignias, I'm pretty sure I followed the colour scheme from the box quite closely on that one, but I could be wrong. I've thrown out the box since, so I can't check.
So either I mucked it up, Airfix mucked it up, or it's an artefact of the angle I photographed it at.
Ah well, it's far from the crown jewel in my collection, so I'll live.
Thanks for the compliment.ArmouredSprue wrote:Excellent finished model!
