IronMan's Ukrainian Odyssey

Post by IronMan129 »

Hey folks!
After reading through "Dazzled's Big Mig Build" I have been inspired to start my furst Mig builds.
I have spoken to Darryl and we have decided to run both topics side by side almost like a GB based in the Aviation Modelling section.
I would like to start from the beginning with my Mig-19 as its the earliest Mig in my stash until I get a 15.
My plan is to build olderMig's first and run up to later Migs but plans rarely go to plan.
so the -19 in question is the 1/72 KP Models Mig-19 and I plan on painting her into the Silver Russian Air Force markings applied in the Cold War with red "19" titles.
Once I have made progress il post pics.

Ok so here is an overview of the kit:
Image
All in all it looks a nice little kit.
It will be built straight out of the box and will be my first Mig build and indeed my first ever Russian built aircraft kit.
The only one I have done in the past is the P-39Q Aerocobra and that isnt even finished yet!
My first job on the -19 will be to sand down all the rivets and make it nice and smooth.
Progress pics to be uploaded soon.

I will watch your 19 build with interest. Over the years I built maybe 10 of them (none survived the move over the big pond though) and they are generally good kits ... if you have patience and new decals :)

I just sold the same kit on eBay but it had some flash on it. Good luck with the build b

Ok so work has commenced on the -19!
I have given the kit a wash and sanded down the raised panel lines so far.
Tonight I plan on doing abit of re-scribing to the fuselarge and wings aswell as hopefully painting and fitting the cockpit and nose weights.
Who knows if all goes well I may even get the fuselarge together but I dont want to rush as I aim to make this model the best yet.

Good luck with the -19 Mav. I built this kit a long time ago and, considering that it's a KP kit, it's not that bad. It just needs a bit of work to bring out the best in it 8-)

Looking forward to seeing this one Adam and it makes a change to the usual -15's and -21's (which so far are the only MiG types in my stash!).
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!

Thanks Daz!
Yeah it seems to be a challenge but I don't mind, very nicely shaped though so it should be pretty fun :)

..... :), Their are a lot of -15's and -21's out there :), your going to love whats next then :), Matchbox Mig-21 haha.

Ok so after having a good nights sleep I came back to the man-cave for a good spring clean!
After a few hours of cleaning I came back to the -19 with a fresh head and found that I needed to spend abit more time sanding the surface detail off.
I'm pretty happy with the result, I do however want to re-scribe some basic panel lines but that'll come in another update.
So here are the fuselage halves after a good sanding:

C&c welcome as always.

Keep at it Mav. The kit shows its age but as you pointed out, the shape is very good. I think if you want an accurate MiG-19 in this scale then the KP kit is a good place to start.
I made one OOB (apart from decals) a few years back and it turned out OK IMHO.

Keep the updates coming.

Dazzled - Thanks Daz, yeah I'l be danmed if anything is gonna stop me :).

Well work has begun and Im liking it so far, Its quite a big beast, I have an SU-34 on the shelf and its a simular size!
So on to the progress pics:

Fuselage pieces off the sprew and trimmed down:

Both pieces glued and setting nicely:

The backing for the burners in place:

Wings together and ready to be put on:

And finally both tails glued in place:

I'm doing the -31 this way as I like the idea of doing the cockpit after the fuselage.
More to come so keep a look out :).

Good to see you back fella, If i was you I wouldn't pop the wings on until you have got those long fuselage seams fettled. If they're anything like one I chucked in the bin anyway.
