Hawk Supermarine Swift - The Record Breaker

Post by AndrewR »

The 1957 kit, as moulded on the undersides. A present from Paul Bradley, who kindly donated this, along with the Aeroclub white metal update set.

Image

I've using the Aeroclub undercarriage, because it's a huge improvement on the kit parts. I will not be carving out the wheel wells, but the undercarriage doors will be replaced with thin plastic card.

Image

Paul has even supplied a spare canopy, but as it is over a solid cockpit with disembodied head perched on top, I'm going to black out the windows.

Image

I have added blanking plates at the jet intakes, to prevent the dreaded "See right through" syndrome, and I also spent a few minutes thinning the intake walls a little. A similar process was also carried out on the enormously chunky wing fences.

Other than that, and filling in the engraved decal positions, it's out of the bag. :-D

This is just for fun, no pretention of accuracy

It's painted in a light blue, to represent the Speed Record aircraft WK198. I'm printing up serials and codes, and will raid the decal box for suitable roundels

Nice to see a 'fun' build from time to time; and it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the Airfix new tool shape-wise....

Was the disembodied head larger to start with, or is the current 'pip' all there was of him/it?
Best wishes

Jim
If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Meanwhile, the decals went on. Roundels from an Xtradecal sheet and ejector seat triangles from spares on the Airfix Vampire T.11 sheet.

Image

Codes and serials are homemade. I had less trouble with decal curling today, possibly because I used a lot more decal fixative spray.

Image

The canopy is sprayed black on the inside, but is not completely opaque. The frames are painted on the outside. It's not fixed in place yet.

I'm not sure where she is now, but here she is at the back of Sunderland Air Museum in the late 70's. You can see the original blue paint.
This is a scan from my original photograph.

Lovely Classic Build, by the way. I had one of these but can't find it anywhere.
So many models, so little time.

Ah, so this is where the Swift on your WW thread appeared from! This is looking great, it may be ancient but with a bit of TLC it will produce a nice looking piece.

Hopefully they will be able to do a nice restoration job. I wonder if they have the wings?

Satin varnish on the Swift. It looks pretty petite next to the Bristol 138!

In the older picture I think the wings were rested on the fence behind. This was on film, so I took less photos. These days I get 500 top quality on a tiny card.
So many models, so little time.
