Matchbox Hawker Hurricane IID
Matchbox Hawker Hurricane IID
After a serious loss of mojo in the first half of the year, it seems to have returned and I have recently got a number of kits off the shelf of doom and over the line. I put up the Airfix Walrus yesterday and today's submission is another oldie, the Matchbox Hawker Hurricane IID, 1989 boxing, which I got as part of a bundle of kits off eBay.
The markings/camo scheme were inspired by an article in a 2005 edition of Scale Aviation Modeller about Export Hurricanes. The article stated that Hurricane KX248 served with the Soviet Air force in 1944 while retaining its DE/MS over AB scheme. There was a nice artist's impression in this scheme with Red Stars at six points and a big 21 on the tail. Well, it looked quite striking and not a scheme commonly seen but further research seemed to indicate that KX248 was actually OG/DG over LG. Not to be put off, I raided the decals from my Matchbox boxing of the Polikarpov I-16 which just so happened to have some big, old Russian writing as well! Well, that had to go on too, didn't it? So, it's not any actual Hurricane that served with the Soviets but, hey, I'm amongst friends here, right?
The canopy looks a bit flat and I toyed with replacing it with a vac form one I have lying around but it just sits too high. I think the spine of the kit doesn't come up enough. I'm just finishing the Airfix old tool Mk II and that has the same issue.
You might be able to pick out Boris in the office, I put him there to hide the lack of detail but I probably needn't have bothered as he can hardly be seen.
I probably need to dull down the spinner, it's a bit too glossy. Weathering was kept to a minimum, I don't know how battered these aircraft were when they were sent to the Soviets but I wanted to avoid going too overboard.
Cheers

Grand job on this 'illustrative' model.

Great to see a familiar aircraft in unfamiliar markings. That is a good model from an old kit. Well done.

I can never get enough of MB kits! I got one of those (a IIc) waiting in the stash....
Yours came out well in that special livery!

Regardless of the decals' provenance, that is a darned good looking Hurricane.

Wow is that one hot Hurri!
Love the Soviet markings and the fantastic result you achieved with a Matchbox kit.
Those old boxes do indeed have some magic in them.
Here's another vote in favor of "representative" markings.
Very well done indeed!

Simple math: basic kit + talented builder + time & effort = OUTSTANDING MODEL!
I love the color scheme on a Soviet Hurricane - you did a fantastic job.

Thanks David (and everyone else who has commented)
I've got a few more builds to post when I get the time - including another Hurricane MkIID. It's the old Airfix one which I may even have acquired from you.
I had got all these builds so far (normally about 98% done) and then just lost the enthusiasm to get them over the line. But the mojo seems to be back and I may even start on some new builds
Cheers
