Mosquito Prototype W4050, Tamiya 1/72.....
Mosquito Prototype W4050, Tamiya 1/72.....
W4050. The DH98 Prototype. First flew on November 25, 1940 still coded as E0234. The first flights were carried out by Geoffrey de Havilland, Jr., who was the company's chief test pilot.
I was able to find some resin wings and nacelles for this build. I added them to the Tamiya kit.
Because of the poor castings of the resin bits, much surgery was needed to set things right.
The tail planes were shortened and reshaped. (Note rivets)
Cockpit done.
Once all together and primed, a gazillion pin holes appeared in the resin wings, humph.....
Two coats of "Trainer Yellow", FS13538 were lavished on the repaired surfaces.
I then discovered I should not have nav lights on the wings nor rivets on the tail planes. More putty and styrene, more primer and more lavishing of yellow paint. That fixed, we had to let all these fixes and paint dry out for several days.
Decals exhumed from the stash, was pleased all the colors matched. Serials were done by hand with dry transfers.
I've needed this yellow bird in my growing collection of Mosquitoes and I finally have one.
W4050 had some minor differences from the production Mosquitoes. Shorter nacelles, concealed exhaust system, shorter elevators, slightly shorter wingspan, no navigation lights on the wings and stall flaps on the leading edges of the wings. Painted bright yellow so that over zealous British anti-aircraft gunners would not shoot her down.
I choked a bit on the canopy framing, it was the last thing to fight me on this build. It was hard to keep it light with the pencil panel lines. AMS kept rearing it's ugly head and I had to remind myself that this is supposed to be fun.
This did not turn out quite as well as I had hoped, with all the wrestling and fixing, much surface detail was lost that I had to add back on with pencil. If I can get a Paragon set for the Tamiya kit I would do another.
I'm glad I finally have this one in the case.

That's an excellent build and all the more so for the effort you have put into it
Best wishes

That's rather striking
All models are equal. Some models are more equal than others.
