Well it's taken me 7 weeks just to draw some lines on it. The idea was to use a fine line permanent marker to put in the wing walk lines as I had run out of suitable decals. A test run on my Stiletto guinea-pig made me think this would work well. Instead some difference in the finish meant the ink repelled from the surface, subsequently took ages to dry and got frequently smudged, as well as the nib slipping into the engraved panel lines. I got as far a two lines done and then stuff happened, work, illness, kids, large extension being built to the house. Now 7 weeks later I got the rest done with yet more smudging and subsequent re-spraying of the leading edges.

Just to pitot tube supports and the undercarriage to go and it might actually get completed.

I have yet to find a marker pen that can be drawn onto paint and does not smudge, especially when touched by water or any other kind of fluid, even Klear. Sometimes, as when drawing lines for ailerons and flaps, its ability to run is useful. But when drawing lines such as wing walks, I have rarely managed to do it successfully. One alternative I have used is to draw the lines on clear decal paper, spray carefully with varnish, then apply as a decal, cut as closely to the line as possible. If anyone does know a foolproof marker pen that can be drawn uniformly and without smudging, it would be interesting to know about it.

I used a 0.8mm UniPin fine line permanent marker (comes in a variety of widths) my test model on the left gave the confidence that it would work fine. I think the gloss coat I put on the HP115 caused some of the issues. I did try giving the surface a light sand to little effect.

The type I have been using recently is an 'Artline Drawing System' 0.5 pen. The advert for it says that it is 'highly water and smudge resistant'. It is certainly a bit better than some others I have tried, but it's by no means perfect. It is still prone to smudging when in contact with anything watery so it is best protected with several light sprays of varnish.

The uni pin just stays wet and smudgy for a while and best left 24 hours and then it's fine

That really does look good, James. I've had none of those things happen that you describe but have still managed to do next to no modelling over the past seven weeks

Managed to do the trickiest part of the build tonight without too much faff namely adding the numerous supports to the large pitot tube. All cut from wire using dividers to measure and secured with superglue. Once dry I also went over the joints with some thinned PVA. The tip of the pitot was also inserted at this point.

It needs a coat of paint to tie it in and then just the under carriage to go.

Very impressive work on those wires, James. The sort of thing that would have me pulling out my hair (if I had any left).
