This is the first indigenous Russian WWII aircraft to appear on my display shelves for many, many years. And considering it was the most-produced aeroplane of WWII (upwards of 37,000), it is about time. (I did build the old Airfix offering in the 60s!)
Built pretty much out of the box, work on this short-run Russian kit starts around here in my workbench window:

It seems only a few torpedo-bomber versions may have been produced, or only tested. This one is from 23 OShAP, Black Sea Fleet, Summer 1944.
The kit is quite nicely detailed, but over-engineered in places, and lacking positive location of many small parts. The tailplanes are butt joins, and the wings are almost butt joins. I reinforced both with paperclip dowels. Filler was used frequently and threatens some of the delicate engraved detail.
Decals look nice but are not up to modern standards. Silvering was common and I had to paint over many silvered sections.
The glazing is clear but very thick. On the other hand notice the delicate markings embossed on the windscreen.
The kit provided 2 wing landing light covers, but I made my own acetate cover for just one wing. Some parts on the sprues are probably for other versions.
Painted with Xtracolour enamels. I mixed the brown, and used USMC field green long before I found I had acquired Russian AF green at some point. I don't do many Russian aircraft!

Thanks for looking,

A very neat build all round; excellent work
Best wishes
Jim
If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

I enjoyed watching this coming together on your WW thread David and that is a really great model of a not often seen variant of this famous Soviet aircraft.

Thanks, George. I use elastic thread. I am away from home for another week or so and cannot look up the trade name for you. I am sure lots of others on this forum also use it. It is clear-coloured so I have to paint it with thinned matt black after it is installed with superglue. In my view the thread is too thick for 1/72, so I split it with the tip of a sharp modelling knife, and it can be separated into thinner strands.gbrwn56 wrote:Great build, what did you use for the ariel?
