Airfix 1/72nd Westland Lynx HAS 3

Post by ShaunW »

I actually built this model last October for the Scale Model World show at Telford as part of the Classic British Kits SIG Royal Navy display. I was moving models about in their storage boxes this afternoon and realised that I had never featured this build on the forum either as part of my Workbench Window (I was in a rush to get it finished) or as a finished model in this section. This is the most OOB build I have done on here and very little has been added, just a an overhead switch console in the cockpit from scrap plastic card, antenna wire from stretched sprue together with an additional antenna at the rear of the boom which was missing in the kit and I also altered the rear wheels to give the characteristic splayed out look displayed by the full-size as opposed to the straight ahead look offered by the kit. Torpedo thingies were supplied with the kit but I chose not to fit them as I preferred the look of the aircraft without. Paint is Hu-126 applied by airbrush and decals are from the kit and behaved themselves well. The markings are for No. 815 Squadron, HMS Exeter Ship's Flight, April 1987.

Not my finest build as it was done in a bit of a hurry but the kit is a good one IMHO and didn't require much in the way of filler and even the fit of the cockpit glazing, sometimes a bit of an issue on these old Airfix helos (Sea King and Puma spring to mind!), was good. In addition, the fit of the main rotor was good enough to allow for it not to be permanently fixed, which aids transportation and storage of the model.

Thanks for looking.

Nice build! Really nice work on such a small helicopter. Very fine painting of the wiper blades on the windshield. In the past, when I tried to paint them they turn into blobs.

Very nice !

I'm half way through a Hobbyboss one at the mo (my 8th Lynx build!) and I am firmly convinced that the Airfix one, whilst it could steal a few detail tips from Hobbyboss, is definitely the most convincing looking.

Agreed, the Airfix kit captures the svelte lines of the Lynx. Maybe in a few years we'll get a new tool from Airfix.

Lovely build Shaun, and I agree it's a really nice kit - I had the later boxing with the later noses added but alas never built it.

Many thanks to all for your very kind words. In some ways this was a frustrating build in that I wanted to do more with it but didn't have the time - there is some detail missing OOB, such as guards in front of the engine intakes that I could now add but I think that would risk the existing paint finish so maybe not. Ho hum, maybe I should build another one then

Sounds like an excuse for a Lynx GB perhaps?
