D.H. Gipsy Moth

Post by vacant »

This is another restoration of a model I was given. It's probably the old 1/72 FROG kit, though of course, this kit has been reboxed by others.

The starting point consisted of the fuselage, assembled and painted blue. The upper wings were intact and painted silver. There was one lower wing and one wheel.

The restoration work involved cleaning up the starting parts and scratch building everything else. This aircraft had the long exhaust pipe on the starboard side – other Gipsy Moths appear to have it on the port side. I got it wrong. The dihedral of the lower wings is also not quite right

The colour scheme and markings are for an aircraft that was used in the 1985 film ‘Out of Africa’. The yellow and black represents an aircraft from the Royal Aero Club. In the film, it showed the registration AAMY (in honour of Amy Johnson) instead of AAMT. The markings on the upper wing should be nearer the wing tips. The decals which were made on my ink jet printer are far from perfect. I have omitted a logo that should be on the forward part of the fuselage. The aircraft is still flying in Kenya.

Sorry Daz - I beat you to this one!

P.S. I see on the photo that something has gone dreadfully wrong with the wing tip of the lower port wing; I have now reshaped it to the correct outline.

Another great rescue. Very well done.

All the best.

Very nicely done Vacant. I have this kit in the stash and the Out of Africa scheme is one that I have in mind for it.
