Commando comic cover - Black Zero

Post by Purplethistle »

As a wee laddie, I always looked forward to the new crop of Commando comics, especially the ones with covers painted by Ian Kennedy as to me they seemed to jump off the page.
Here's my attempt to recreate that with one of my all time favourite Ian Kennedy covers.

Unfortunately no manufacturer has so far had the vision to make a dragon decal so it had to be hand painted. Fortunately the fit of the Hobby Boss Zero type 52 is so sweet that I was able to pre paint the fuselage and wings separately and paint the dragons onto the fuselage without having to work around the wings.

That really looks the business PT, especially posed against Kennedy's original artwork on the comic. And as for your casual mention of painting the dragon with a paintbrush  That is really something, an excellent bit of brush work, I dread to think how it would have turned out had I attempted to paint it!!

That´s some fearsome looking dragon, a first class decal couldn´t look any better.

That looks really good. I still have a lot of these old magazines stored away and it's great to see a nice link like this.

The only one I did so far was from the book, Wooden Wolf, about a night intruder Mosquito with two Long Tom rockets.

This would make a very good idea for a display at the model shows. I may try some.

Thanks for the idea. Excellent freehand painting there, by the way.
So many models, so little time.

Many thanks for all the kind comments guys. Chuck, if you're still interested in having a go at a Commando comic cover type thing, the Books and comics GB is still on for another 4 weeks.

That is a fine looking Mossie Chuck! Have a look at the website of all the Commando comic covers, there's a tonne of inspirational images there!

The reaction to the Dragon Zero has been so heartening that I'm tempted to look for a 1/48 Zero and have a bash at recreating this one! :-D

Marvelous result! Very well executed!
I have a small collection of Air Ace comics, and I seek out any such comics, Commando, etc.. with Kennedy's art within.

cheers,

PT that is a brilliant looking model! You've done a superb job on those dragons!

May I ask - What do you use for your pics? That's such a nice looking build it could use some more light on it to show it off!

Just the camera on my phone, Stuart. I had hoped to get better uplighting on the bottom of the Zero from a sheet of white card underneath, but on reflection I might have been better using a mirror. (unintentional pun!)

Next time you use it, go into the camera settings and see if you can adjust the exposure comp (+1?) or even see if you can switch the metering to Spot. (I can on my Samsung) - it might help.
