I'm on a roll now. I started this a while ago and got busy with work and home projects, and shelved it. Well I've got the urge to press on and try to finish it. This is a 1979 release of the F-4C that I'm going to dress up as a Marine F-4B. I realize the wing is wrong and the weapons officer pit is wrong and the tires are too large. But I really don't care that much, I wanted a Marine bird so that's what i'm gonna build.Image
Image

To that end I have an KITS WORLD decal sheet depicting a VMFA-542 bird out of Da Nang in 1966Image
To go with that I also have a FURBALL wingwalk decal sheet to get around masking and painting those.

Just for the heck of it I Googled the J-79 engine and did a little computer magic and have some engine fronts to dress up the blank plate Monogram molded into the intake so as to not see through the length of the model

So with any luck, I'll be getting a start back in on this tomorrow.

Looking forward to your input and comments......

Greg

That's a cunning plan you have come up with for the front of the engins, that deserves to work.

This is going to look more than a bit special. The Toom is a beautifully ugly beast. And the grey and white Navy and Marine schemes suit it well.

All the best.

Ah! Another Phantom at last!
Love the engine faces.
You could sell those! I would buy some! But will you build some trunking to mount those faces some way back?

A USMC F-4, excellent (I finished a Hase F-4J in USMC colours on here a few years ago) and that is a very neat idea for the engine fronts.

The engine front is just a screen grab saved and sized to fit. Anyone can do it in a photo editor. I just did a google image search for J-79 engine, found one I liked and boom. Done printed it out, and there you have it.

Since I had already closed the fuselage and added the wings and not taken any pictures....... I thought I'd post one of the office just because it's there. This is based on an air force model so the back seat is all wrong for a Navy B model. I didn't put the control stick in the rear pit as per a -B. I'n going for a closed canopy anyway so not much to be seen anyway. And it's going to the display case, so only the wife and grandson will see it. And you folks.
Image

Not much got done on it today, had a visit with the grandson. I did start some painting though. Sprayed the speed brake well and panels with red. I also shot the landing gear doors red so I can go back and mask off the red edge warning on them. I may be in a world of hurt doing it this way but I despise trying to paint them in later by hand.
Also laid down some masking tape in the bare metal exhaust area. Don't want to foul that with paint till later.

And a peek down the intake at the face of the compressor. Not a good picture, the camera just couldn't find the focus. But it give you the idea there's something in there.

Thanks for looking

Really nice to see a bit of Monogram plastic being built - Looks like a great idea for a project.

Monogram phantoms look like nice kits. Have you tried dry fitting the intakes? I wonder if they're as problematic as other kits.

This is really coming together very well Greg. In my view only Phantom Phanatics would probably realise the rear cockpit is wrong, to most of us it looks the business! F-4 kits do tend to share the difficult intakes issue!
