Re: 1/48 Monogram Phantom F-4B US Marines
I did some masking and spraying on the u/c doors.....actually turned out better than I would have expected.
Since I had the airbrush out and loaded with white I shot the interior of the intakes and splitter plates. And for the heck of it emptied the cup on the bottom of the airframe just to use up the paint.

Oh yes they are a pill to fit. Add raised panel lines and poor fit and it's a frustrating day. One I'll be tackling here in the next day or so.Softscience wrote:Monogram phantoms look like nice kits. Have you tried dry fitting the intakes? I wonder if they're as problematic as other kits.

Re: 1/48 Monogram Phantom F-4B US Marines
As I had posted above, the intakes are a PIA. So this morning me and my stump finger made the best of what I could. I think I spent about an hour and a half on each side.
I built this kit way back in the 80's when it was first released, so I had an idea on how this would play out. It's not terrible, but it is time consuming
So after some lunch, I masked up the canopy pieces and got them attached. the fit here is pretty bad also. Monogram really wants you to pose the model with the canopies open. Nothing lines up if they are closed.
Never fear I have a big bottle of PVA so gap filling begins.
Well thats about it for today
Thanks for looking

That's looking really nice indeed!
Interesting what you say about the canopies, I much prefer to have mine closed to retain the lines of the aircraft - It make me wonder if my Mono F-106 will be the same fun as your F-4.

I built the 106 when it was first released. The fit of the canopy fit on the original boxing was perfect. I couldn't begin to hazard a guess on any new rebox of it.Sir T wrote:That's looking really nice indeed!

You'll have to do a little modification, it's molded to be open.Sir T wrote:Ahh really? That's good then as I have an old boxingdollar19 wrote:I built the 106 when it was first released. That is a mean good looking black Phantom front!
I read what you did re masking canopies. I've always attached them, then masked them. I don't know why, it must be so much easier masking them before gluing them on, as you did.
Why have I never thought of that?

Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...

She's looking great, Greg. In my experience, the intakes are always a pain to blend in on Phantom kits. I wonder if Airfix will solve the problem in their new tool kit, due out later this year?

They've come a long way in recent years. So is this Phantom going to be 1/48th?
