Panavia Tornado F3; Airfix 1/72
Panavia Tornado F3; Airfix 1/72
The question of course, is 'why'. It may not appear to be my normal fare. I do have three other Tornado models, Airfix, Matchbox and Revell. So it's not all that unusual. I liked the colour scheme on this one, the black fin/rudder being rather smart when set against the grey and the markings seemed to be quite colourful. The fact that I saw it in its cellophane wrapper in a charity shop also added to its attraction. I suppose I should also mention that it was on sale for £4.
I found it to be a thoroughly confusing kit to build. It seemed to consist of a jumble of options from different periods of its release. There was even an 'Addendum' instruction sheet focusing on the ordnance, but that particular ordnance was not in the box. The decals were also a mystery. Some did not seem to be numbered on the instruction sheet and it was not at all clear as to which should go on which option. I just muddled through by taking a few liberties.
The overall grey should have been simple. The instruction sheet said Hu167 but that looked a bit too dark. I did the usual trawl through web sites and the mystery deepened. It seems that several shades of grey were used with later aircraft having a darker shade.
On closer examination of photos, it also seemed to be the case that different panels could have different greys. The grey, of course, would become a bit lighter over time. In the end, I mixed my own shade of grey then added a few drops of other greys to give several different shades, but not by much.
All in all, it was an interesting build with a reasonable result. The model does have the undercarriage down and the air brakes open. I edited them out for the purpose of the 'flying' photo.

Well done. That kit's a bit of a so and so (I spent ages on the seams on the front fuselage sides) and extra marks for persevering with all that stenciling.

That's a lovely looking build! It may not be your usual fare but it's proved you're not restricted in your abilities!
Best wishes

Very nice! I've been toying with the idea of building one of these myself.

A well tidy Tornado, like it very much.

Nice result Vacant. It reminds me, I build this kit years ago with the wheels up. I also built the Airfix GR1 at the same time. They were great fun.
