ARII, 1/48 Scale P40 E. Pacific "Tiger"

Post by Marc »

Hi all

Recently comnpleted ARII's 1/48 Scale P40E Pacific "Tiger". Gave it a good amount of weathering. Built OBB with kit decals. Not Tamiya quality but still a fun kit to build. Due to simplicity of the kit and it's cheap price the kit would be ideal for modelrs wanting to experiment with finishes and/or home made modifications.

Nice build, I like those Aleutian schemes. What technique did you use for the paint chipping?

Nice job!
The Arii (Otaki) kit is not too bad. I converted one to a P-40N.

cheers,

Super P40 Marc. The weathering is very nicely done.

Spot on Marc, that is a really great looking P-40. At some point I aim to get hold of the new tool Airfix P-40 in 1/48th, as I really like the look of the aircraft and want to move on to more quarter scale builds for single engine stuff.

I used to love these Arii kits when I was kid. Thanks for bringing back a flood of wonderful memories.

Your P-40 looks great. Nice engine work.

I primed the model with Rust-Oleum gray. I then sprayed a coating of R-O silver. I dabbed masking fluid with a hard short bristle brush on all the points of "wear and tear". I then sprayed the final colours. Testors olive drab/Marine OD and Rust-Oleum gray. The same as the primer. The R-O dries very quickly and gives a smooth finish. I then used masking tape to lift off the areas dabbed with the masking fluid. The silver "patches and scratches" was a tad too silver. I toned it down with a good covering of black/brown chalk pastel wash.

The most difficult part of the build was getting the decals down in one piece. They broke up when I attempted to slide them off the backing paper with the result that I spent a lot of time with a small brush and a toothpick, puzzeling the shattered decals together again. (The joys of modeling! :-) ) I used copious amounts of MicroSol to get the decals to conform, especially the tiger heads on the engine cowlings.

That turned out very nice. I too have want to try one of these kits. I remember the Otaki line coming out and always thought they looked like good kits.

Quite a looker, ARII stuff was not bad at all, for some subjects, I think it was the only game in town for a loooong time.
