Airfix 1/72 Douglas F4D-1 Skyray
Hi all,
I picked up this classic at the Southern Expo back in March. I always fancied it but have never got around to it until now.
The decals were colourful and plentiful but very yellowed......
So they were clipped to a piece of plasticard to prevent curling and I then put them into the 'Decal Bleacher' for 24 hours and they came out fine.
The cockpit tub was nicely done by Airfix but I had to mask the inside of the fuselage as it is grey above the cockpit floor but white in the bottom half as that becomes the nose wheel U/C bay.
In the 'Special Instructions' paragraph it tell you how much nose weight it needs but there isn't enough room in the small nose cavity for enough. Thankfully (apparently) the front nose wheel door closes again once the wheel is down, so I stuffed a bit more lead in there.
After the main spraying of the airframe (which was simple white and grey) I realised that despite the extensive decal sheet the darker stripe bits (are they walkways?) were not provided as a decal. So I masked them up.....
And sprayed them and then edged them in black. Then the rest of assembly went fine, and after some minor detail painting like the silver leading edges and such like I then did the decals and hit it the whole thing with a satin coat.
Here it is.
Finish is all Humbrol enamels and Humbrol Satincote.
A colourful addition to the display for sure.
Thanks for looking,
Regards,

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Very nice. One of my favourite US Navy aircraft. Were you able to get enough weight into the nose?

Superb. Now I want to build mine.

Nice outcome, this Airfix kit stood the test of time pretty well.

Oh, I like this one alot. Got to see many of them as a boy growing up on a Marine air base. You nailed it exactly.

It's really great to see you building on here again, Zee and that is a superb build of this Airfix classic. The "decal bleacher" did a great job of restoring the original decals.
