Hawker Tempest VI; Matchbox 1/72

Post by vacant »

I am working on another restoration. It's a Matchbox 1/72 Tempest that I am building as a Mk VI. The parts I had at the beginning were two fuselage sides, a spinner, the top and bottom part of one wing, but only the bottom part of the other wing. And oh yes, I also had thee small round retaining piece for the prop/spinner.

The most tricky job was in building a new top part for the port wing, especially around the intake at the wing root. The top part also extends underneath to form the ailerons and flaps. The surface is scribed with panel lines, though you can't see them because of the brightness of the photo. I'm not sure what it will look like when painted. I'm hoping for the best, but fearing for the worst. I have not made the exhausts yet. They will have to e carved from thick plastic card - they will be relatively crude but I might get away with it.

It needs a lot more work!

And certainly a lot better than one I'd made starting from the same ingredients!
Best wishes

This is as much scratch build as kit. The mods made so far look just fine so I am certain that the exhausts will look the part too. Amazing what can be done with bits of plastic, wire, tube, filler, etc….

Ever thought of stealing a few bits from the Airfix Typhoon if you have one, tail wheel, exhausts, canopy, seat and it's armourplate.

If I had that many spare parts, I might have considered building a complete Typhoon!

The Matchbox Tempest is a rather nice little kit. Of course Vacant is operating without all the parts - he obviously loves a challenge.

Job done. I'm quite pleased with my replacement top wing, even though it rather shows up how deep and wide the panel lines on the original kit are - they are typically Matchbox in their generous proportions. I should have either filled them in or skinned over the original parts with 5 thou. plastic card. As it is, it is what it is, i.e. a part part, part scratch built, part spares, all giving a wing and a prayer kind of build.

Great stuff, Vacant that is another very inspirational build/save. I can't tell the scratched parts from those of the kit from here!
