Airfix 1/72 BAe Hawk T.1 (old tool)

Post by ShaunW »

I've been at this build on my WW thread for a while now and in fact this model is my first completion of 2017! The kit used was a 1990's re-pop of the 1970's original and came moulded in bright red plastic as the kit was a Red Arrows boxing. The old tool kit has its faults and I believe the Airfix designers used a prototype or mock-up aircraft as their base as various details were missing that went on to feature in the production series aircraft. The main details that were required were deeper strakes to the rear fuselage underside and wing fences, which were added using plastic card. I also decided to drop the flaps and made scratch built replacements using photos as a guide. The seats were given basic detail and Tamiya tape belts and I also made up a new internal cockpit centre cowl to replace the inaccurate kit one. A replacement internal screen was then required, which I made using some leftover transparency material from a 1/35th vehicle build. The outer edge of the internal screen was painted white to give the impression of the frame work which should be on the outer surface of the canopy but which was not moulded on by Airfix. I figured this cheat would give a better result than my attempts to freehand paint the necessary framework. The various intakes/outlets on the spine and fuselage were opened up with fine drills and files and the small pipe (fuel dump?) on the rear right lower fuselage was added using a bit of plastic tubing.

This isn't a bad old kit really and most of the main inaccuracies are easily corrected. I did not, however, attempt to correct one glaring inaccuracy, namely, the lack of detonation cord in the roof of the main canopy. Apparently this can be done but I will leave such work to better modellers than I.

Paint is mainly enamel and applied by airbrush - Revell Matt 5 white and Humbrol Hu-174 Signal Red and Hu-40 light grey. Black areas are Tamiya acrylic. Decals are chiefly from Xtradecal sheet X72166 with stencils coming from the kit and my spares. I'm a big fan of the old red/white/grey RAF trainer scheme and have wanted to feature a Hawk so painted for a while. Not a world beating build but I'm quite happy with it.

Many thanks for the kind words, chaps, they are much appreciated.

Iggie - I'm my own worst critic. Once I've finished a build, that has invariably been sitting on my bench for a number of months due to my general slowness, I know every build fault and grain of dust trapped on the paint work and can't help thinking I could have done that better, or that better, etc etc....

Superb bit of work Shaun, your mods have really brought a shine to this classic kit. I wish I had the patience and skill for all that detailing.

That is excellent. And nice to see a Hawk in its "Proper" colour scheme.

Many thanks for your kind comments, guys.

I agree, Eric. I'm not quite as keen on the later grey and gloss black schemes but do like the Hawk in wrap round camouflage.

Super job Shaun! I too agree that this is one of the best colour schemes for the Hawk, very attractive (but probably requires some patient masking!).

I have this kit in my stash awaiting my attention.

But I couldn't compete with this one mate! Top job!
