Anyone for chess ? Airfix BE2c

Post by splash »

This is one kit that was not joining the stash, having heard great reviews of the original kits release, I just had to have one when I saw it had been re-released with a stunning checkers board colour scheme.

The quality and design of the kit is excellent and at £10 is excellent value for money, you get options for two a/c one as seen in France 1915 and the other 1916 operating out of Edinburgh.

For me it is a simple choice as to which vertiginous to build, it had to be the Scottish black and white check board version

You will see from the images that I have unconventionally not painted the cockpit before assembling the body, the reason is I have heard lots of comments about people having fit issues with some of Airfix's new kits, I personally think these issues are caused by Airfix designing their kits with extremely fine tolerances and if you add paint before assembly that's when you have the fit issues. So the simple salusion is build first then paint.

As I suspected the part fit is excellent requiring no filler and only a swipe of the sanding stick to clean up the joins.

The decal sheet supplied is exceptional I thought at first it would be a nightmare but the decals are strong enough to move around but thin enough to handle the curved surfaces and small molded detail.

To easy the task of adding all the decals I first sprayed the main parts gloss white as the checkered decals are black and clear, I'm glad I used gloss white as it made the positioning of the decals a lot easier.

Says the master of rigging ships :-D

The decals are going on much easier than I had anticipated, Airfix have done an excellent job, this kit is up there with the best produced by other manufacturers.

Still not going to attempt it, being a huge fan of PC-10 and CDL :), but your tip about the gloss white base is a keeper just in case I ever do.

John You aught to have a go at it.

Honest this has been the easiest chequered decal pattern I have ever applied everything has fitted where it should and all the black squares have aligned.

I only found one missing black square  in front of the tail plane, so I just painted that in.

That looks superb Alan and your tip about the white gloss will no doubt be very useful for when I tackle mine
Best wishes

Now before you all start shouting your mad that's the wrong decal under the wrong wing, I know, my cunning plan is to use the spare decals from the other colour scheme under the top wing, I'm going to draw some dark brown lines over the frames and decals then useing thin coats of a linen colour until the decals and lines are only just visible, with luck it will give it a translucent effect.
