92 Squadron 100th Anniversary (sort of!!)
Okay, a little bit of history first. I often passed the A1 Lightning going up and down said A1. I eventually found out it was XN728, an F.2 later F.2A belonging for it's whole service life to 92 Squadron. This developed into something of a liking for the Squadron and a decision to model the unit's aircraft in good old 1/72nd scale. Happily I found that all of them are available in kit form (I used a list from Wing Commander C G Jefford's 'RAF Squadrons', well worth a look). It helped that most of their wartime aircraft were Spit's!!.
92.
92 Squadron were formed on 1st September 1917 at London Colney, the nucleus from 56TS. Their first aircraft was the good old Sopwith Pup. They flew this until April 1918 when they switched to the R.A.F Se.5A. This was used until August 1919 when the squadron was disbanded (hence the sort of in the title- see in a moment)..
Pup (Airfix), Se.5 (Revell)
From then until October 1939 they were essentially non-existent. It was in this month that they reformed on the Bristol Blenheim If which they had until March 1940....
Blenheim (Plastyk)
Then, in that same month they converted to something called the Supermarine Spitfire (it'll never catch on DazDaMan!!!).
Spitfire I (Airfix)
The Squadron fought through the Battle of Britain, gaining a respectable score of vile Huns!!!!. In February 1941 they received the Mk.Vb
Mk.Vb- (Airfix), Vc (SMER)
This was used until August 1942 when they also used the Vc. By this time they were in North Africa and the desert campaign. They were here until July 1943. In April of that year they began using the Mk.IX Spitfire and then the Mk.VIII in July. (Mk.VIII first pic (FROG), two Mk.IX schemes second pic (Italeri both)).
They then moved up into Sicily and then Italy using the Mk.VIII. In June 1946 they received the Mk.IX again before disbandment for a second time in December of 1946. They never reached Germany in that time but managed Austria instead. However disbandment was short lived and they were reformed in January 1947 at Acklington when No.91 Squadron was renumbered 92. They began the jet age on the Gloster Meteor III. The Mk.IV followed in May of 1948 and then the Mk.8 in October 1950.

The jet age for the squadron moved up a notch when they received the Canadair build Sabre F.4 (Airfix),
The Hunter came along in April 1956 with the Mk.4 (Airfix FGA.9 Freightdog F.4 conversion set) and then the Mk.6 (Matchbox) in March 1957.
They were Hunter users until April of 1963 when the mighty Lightning arrived. The squadron was in Germany by this time and blue tails were common.

In March 1977 they were again disbanded (boo!), but reformed on the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in April. My book ends with disbandment for a fourth time in 1991.
Phantom FGR.2 (Fujimi), Hawk T.1 (Airfix)
In September 1992 they formed on the BAe Hawk T.1 until a fifth disbandment in 1994 after two years as part of No.7 FTS and as a Reserve Squadron. The Air Warfare Centre at RAF Waddington is now numbered 92 Squadron. It's a but hard to model that but a picture might do later!! . By my reckoning they have been active for about 80 years but hey, it's close enough!!!!!!.

P.S. I realise some of the codes (colours and sizes), on the Spitfire's might not be 100% correct, I had to make do on occasion and these will be dealt with sometime soon!!.

Thanks chaps. Go for it Spaceowl. I was lucky that all of the aircraft were available in injection moulded and 1/72nd, but if you don't mind other media's/materials it could open up other Squadrons. Some have some rare birds indeed early on in their existence.

Nice work all round Mark; I have a set of decals to do the same but for 12 Squadron as a great Uncle flew as an air gunner with them on Lancs out of Wickenby. your builds have reminded me to think about making a start!

It brings some life to otherwise inanimate objects when you know where and how they were used and who flew them. Might turn to my second 'favourite' 29 Squadron next. I think they have some more obscure aircraft very early on so not all may be modelled.
Stupot: I was going to do the Phantom in all blue but went with the grey in the end. Still with the Airfix Phantom on the way..... Also think I may have broken modelling law by NOT doing the Hawk in RA colours .
