Yak 28; Contrail vacform 1/72
Yak 28; Contrail vacform 1/72
Here's a blast from the cold war past. The Contrail vacform kit of the Yak 28 is a bit out of my normal run of builds, but it came as part of a job lot of kits that I recently bought for very little. It was the only vacform kit in the lot, so I had to build it first.
The transparent parts had yellowed beyond redemption so I had to make new ones. The kit had no instructions - they were missing from the box. The result is that I am left with two small pod-shaped parts and I have no idea where they should go. All ideas gratefully received.
The colour scheme is 'illustrative' of some that were in camouflage, though most were in natural metal. I just didn't fancy natural metal on this one.
It takes me back to the days of 'The Observer's Book of Aircraft' in the 1960s.

Excellent work, Vacant, this is a proper bit of Soviet Cold War jet-tech. Looks good in the camo scheme.

I am not nor,all a fan of aoircraft with holes in the back but this one could help me to change my mind. Good work indeed especially as you had no instructions to follow.

One of my favourite aircraft! A pleasure to see a new build of this sexy shape - and there are so many variations.
I have a couple of scary 1/72 A-Model varieties in the stash, and waiting for a camo version of the new Bobcat 1/48 kit.
Well done!
David

Very nice bit of work, particularly from a vacform. Never had much luck with them myself.
The big question is, is this a Firebar or a Brewer? With that nose, I suspect the latter, though one has to wonder about the AAMs under the wings -- are those AA-2 Atolls?
You should think about getting a Yak-128 Fiddler to keep it company -- if someone makes a kit of the -128.

Re: Yak 28; Contrail vacform 1/72
One always gets caught out! The easy one first are the weapons. They are AA-7 Apex IR Version. The kit came with two of these missiles in cast metal. They were rather crude and would have taken a lot of work to clean them up. By chance, I had recently bought a box of Soviet ordnance as part of a job lot. It contained two injection missiles that matched the cast metal ones, so I used them. I can not, however, claim that I could find a photo of a camouflaged Yak 28 carrying these weapons, though some photos do show what look like the racks to which they are attached.
As for the colour scheme, I used the Wings Palette site and a site on which Polly Singh has built a Yak 28. Neither site gives the exact type, i.e. whether Brewer, Broussard, Firebar or Maestro. This is why I made sure to say that the colour scheme was 'illustrative', my euphemism for c'ould be completely wrong'! I have no specialist knowledge of the type so I am in no position to know. This is why it's always good when someone is able to make helpful comments to clear up my oceans of ignorance.

Accuracy of the weapon fit out and scheme aside, that's a cracking looking build.
I for one wouldn't know the difference between the variants so I'm just happy to see great modelling

Re: Yak 28; Contrail vacform 1/72
Judging by the extent of the nose glazing, the inboard wing fences and the pointed slipper tanks, this looks like a Yak-28B Brewer-A. But that was a tactical bomber and would not be carrying air-to-air missiles.
I could be wrong!
Lovely model, anyway!
cheers,
David

Re: Yak 28; Contrail vacform 1/72
It's probably fairly safe to assume that the weapons load is wrong - from what I can see in various sources, I think those particular large weapons seem to have been mounted further inboard, i.e. in place of the slipper tanks. I will probably leave them where they are, even knowing that it is wrong. I know that this could be regarded as a fairly slap dash approach, but ........... it was the least of my problems with this kit. Besides, life has moved on and I am now coming to grips with a model I bought fairly recently that I now discover is missing the entire part for under one wing, as well as other pieces that have gone walkabout over the years. I never seem to learn.
