This was started last year on holiday as a "quickie". It only took me 18 months to finally finish it

The kit is actually of the Apache ground attack version so I had to modify it slightly to bring it closer to the recce version used by the RAF. I've always liked the early Mustangs and felt they were unfairly maligned

Excellent work, Eric, that is a very nice looking early Mustang - it's good to see one, not that there's anything wrong with the later versions, far from it, but the early series aircraft don't seem to get modelled all that much.

Cool build, Eric!

Looks like Academy did better with the A-36 than with their later Mustangs. The windscreen looks much better. You paint job is really nice too. Thanks for sharing.

It's a nice little kit which contains a Jeep as well, so it's good value for money too. I'm sure I'll build another one some day but at long last I've got a Mustang in my collection.

Good to see an early variant - as has been commented these tend to be overlooked. Very well finished - and a quick(!) build to boot!

I forgot to mention the minor modifications and research I did.

As the RAF mainly used these aircraft for reconnaissance, they were not fitted with wing mounted machine guns. The gun bulges had to be removed from the kit as they are pre-moulded into the wings and the gun barrels (naturally) omitted. The decals sheet came from the now ceased "Model Alliance Workshop" British and Commonwealth Mustangs sheet. For reference I also made use of Malcolm Lowe's SAM Publications book on the Allison Mustangs. Indeed, it was that book that prompted me to build the model.

Finally an early Mustang in 72 scale, where you don´t have to correct the inner wing leading edge (most available P-51 A/B/C kits got the leading edge of the -D model....)
