Hasegawa 1/72 F-5

Post by Old_Tonto »

Imperial Iranian Air Force RF-5A, Mehrabad, 1973
Hasegawa 1/72 F-5A modified with ESCI nose & tip tanks. Decals from the spares box & home made.

This was my entry for the Golden Oldies GB, the kit dating from 1967. I detailed the interior and scratch built a seat - to be honest not mush is visible once the canopy is attached.
Looking at these images I'd say the gun barrels are too long so I'll sort that out.

The Iranians were the first customers to get the Recce version of the F-5. They were used to fly secret intel gathering missions into the southern USSR and at least two were shot down by Soviet air defences. Pretty ballsy stuff. They were later replaced in this role by Recce Phantoms with all the bells and whistles.

I opted to make the recce version as I'd recently completed the same kit as an F-5A. Maybe I should do a two seater to complete the set?
I'm planning to do a few Imperial Iranian builds in the future so I used this build to experiment with camo & colours. From that point of view it was a successful build.

Hope you like it.

Looks very good indeed, especially for such an elderly kit.

I enjoyed watching it being built and have to admit its awesomeness for such a classic old bugger.

That's very nice, I have a soft spot for the old Freedom Fighter. Picked one of these oldies up last week.

Wow. Excellent work.

Me or the kit?

Thanks for the kind words guys. I think it's time we had an F-5 group build. 8-)

One of the first kits I ever built was the Airfix F-5A . That would have been back in 1966 or so.

I have a Hasegawa T-38 to do which is intended to be part of my NASA collection - if I can find some appropriate decals.

Well, that turned out well, didn't it? Amazing to think you can get results like that out of a 1960s Hasegawa F-5. You were right, the colours really do suit it too.

What's the next F-5 going to be?

Really nice, OT and an interesting bit of history regarding the type's use by the Iranians. I'd do the two-seat version as well if I were you, go on, you know you want to

Love it! We don't see enough F-5 models these days.

I've always liked the F-5 and this one looks fantastic. I love the Iranian scheme.

Was this one of the Hasegawa kits that FROG reboxed and put out under their name in the early 70s or thereabouts? I remember making the FROG F-5 in Norwegian colours -- okay, NMF with Norwegian markings.

Also, let me add my voice to the praise: that is a very nice model.

A bit of supplementary info: Hi-Decal are releasing an IIAF and VNAF F-5 sheet in the coming year. Thought you might be interested.
