Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
The old Airfix kit lacks the DIHEDRAL that exists outboard of the engines.

Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
A pleasure to see the old kit turned out in an unusual finish!

Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
Oh, that's a relief! I couldn't remember the Dak having anhedral -- quite the opposite, in fact -- nor could I imagine why it, being a low-wing design and all, would possibly have it! Sweep on the outer panels, yes, but anhedral???Eric Mc wrote:The old Airfix kit lacks the DIHEDRAL that exists outboard of the engines.
Still a lovely model. Am I right in presuming the camo is the classic RAAF Foliage Green/Dark Earth/Sky Blue -- or an approximation of same? And did you get that paratrooper figure?

Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
So does this still apply to Airfix's AC-47 Gunship?Eric Mc wrote:The old Airfix kit lacks the DIHEDRAL that exists outboard of the engines.
I had a picture of the boxart on Photobucket, but it's not allowing me to copy the link

It does. It was the same mould.

Is it easy to rectify or shall I just sell it?Eric Mc wrote:CementNotGlue wrote:So does this still apply to Airfix's AC-47 Gunship?Eric Mc wrote:The old Airfix kit lacks the DIHEDRAL that exists outboard of the engines.

Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
It can be rectified but it also has nose shape issues, which are harder to fix. There are three other decent C-47/DC-3 kits in the market place that are miles better without resorting to messing with the ancient Airfix one -
Esci (now Italeri)
Italeri (from their own moulds)
New Airfix
I'd still build it but as a pure "classic" build with no real attempt to fix its problems. If I wanted a decent accurate DC-3, I'd build one of the others (as indeed I did, not that long ago).

Thanks for explaining that Eric.
I'll put mine up for a swap then!

Re: Airfix C-47 Dakota
Back in the 1970s there was a part work magazine covering the history of aviation called "Wings". Incorporated as "cover features" on some of the editions were a host of model builds by well known magazine editor Ray Rimmell. One of his builds was the original Airfix DC-3/C-47 which he built as the well know Berlin Airlift aircraft, "Camel Caravan to Berlin". He included in the article all the fixes he had to apply to try and make the kit better - including how he adjusted the wing dihedral. That was back in 1977. At that time, the Airfix DC-3/C-47 was the only kit available in 1/72.

Nice to see an unusual scheme and the old kit built to this standard!
Well done!

Colours were Olive Drab, Foliage green (or an approximation) and neutral grey and the paratrooper was included.
