Daz's Warbird Tribute - FINISHED!

Post by DazDaMan »

Nearly 20 years ago now, I first saw this aircraft flying in the capable hands of Mark Hanna.....

Image

This was the first time I'd ever seen a Messerschmitt variant, of any sort, in the air. The Buchon had not long been rebuilt to fly again after a landing accident, and had appeared in the films Battle of Britain, and Memphis Belle, as well as the TV series Piece of Cake and A Perfect Hero.

Just over a year later, the warbird world was saddened by the loss of Mark and G-BOML in a flying accident in Spain in September 1999. I was lucky enough to see them both fly just two months prior to the accident, and well remember his father, Ray, chasing after him in the OFMC P-40 Kittyhawk (he chased after him in the Spitfire the year before - and that was EPIC!)

I built a Heller Bf109K in similar colours a wee while back that I thought really looked the part (especially with the colours - they looked great on it!), so I decided that, at some point, I would do G-BOML in what I thought was one of the best "Messerschmitt" colour schemes ever worn by a warbird.

There's only one real choice for this project, and it's this....

This should be a nice, easy build, after the rather hellish Fokker Dr.1 project....!

Nice work Daren. What scale is that Academy Buchon? Braille Scale, I hope! Is the kit any good?

It's 1/48th, and rather nice. I've built lots of these over the years!

Anyway, here's a progress shot of G-BOML.....

An excellent tribute build, Daz. It was indeed a great loss to the warbird world when Mark Hanna was killed.

A bit more Buchon progress....

Still a bit more camo to go on before starting the decals, but she's getting there slowly.

That's a great pilot to make a tribute to and you're doing him and G-BOML proud.

Have you done a Flight of the Intruder A-6? The wee Tamiya 1/100 one has a decal option in the markings of the squadron in the movie. :-D

Slow progress on the Buchon.

I'm waiting on the new decals arriving so I can crack on with the finish, but I also need to make new arms for her pilot...!

Very nice work on the scalloped edge!
Best wishes

I've just started collecting the Tamiya 1/100 range as my LMS is stocking them for £3.50 each. I have the EE Lightning, Il 26 Beagle, and the MiG 19 so far - and the A-6 is the next on my list (I may get two or three) - he has about 8 in stock on the shelf so no panic! I'll let you know what decals it come with.

Nice one, Daren. The Buchon is a decent looking '109 variant IMHO and think of the classic war films that might have suffered if it wasn't for the type - it certainly looks better than, say, a Harvard trying to masquerade as Prof Messerschmitt's most famous product.

If we didn't have them in bulk thanks to the Spanish Air Force, Battle of Britain would have probably been done with these....!

Not that I have anything against the Bf108/Nord, of course!
