Kawasaki Ki61-1 Hien (Tony);Hasegawa 1/72

Post by vacant »

This was a straightforward build, straight from a box. It was a present given to me when I was in Japan about two weeks ago so it only seemed right to build it sooner rather than later. It's my second build of this kit but with so many colour schemes from which to choose, that's not a problem. My previous one was finished in silver with green streaks.

The kit was first released in 1980. The one I built was released with new decals in 1999.

As usual with Hasegawa, it was a fairly simple build, though unusually, the wing roots needed some filler. When there is something wrong with a Hasegawa kit, I usually put it down to an error I made.

There was a comprehensive decal sheet with options for two aircraft. The decals behaved perfectly.

It's another model I can add to my expanding Japanese collection that is now around 40 (though I have not counted them).

Very smart build Vacant!

What is the significance of the clover leaf emblem? Squadron/unit or an individual pilot?
Best wishes

Jim

The aircraft is shown in wings Palette with the title;
Unit: 3rd chutai, 244th sentai
Serial: unknown
Aircraft of 244th sentai CO substitute -, Kofu AB, August 1945.
I think the emblem is a personal one, but could be wrong. He was credited with downing 9 B29s. He dies in an air crash in 1954.

An old favourite! Well done!
I built this many years ago, but then disposed of almost my entire Japanese model fleet (admittedly not too extensive) when I moved house - except for the Airfix Dinah and Val and the Hasegawa Kawanishi E7K1 Type 94 floatplane.

One day I hope I get around to building the Otaki 1/48 Ki-100 radial-engined derivation of this fighter (as seen at Cosford).

cheers,

David

Very nice. Was that the mount of Irish/Japanese ace Toshiro O'Saka?

Only joking - but that looks like a shamrock on the fuselage.

Nice one, Vacant another one of your excellent builds. The Tony was a handsome fighter, that's for sure.

Nice that, the Tony is a really attractive aircraft to my eye. I like the way you've done the distressed paint work so typical of Japanese planes of this era, that sets it off well.
