Douglas Boston; Airfix 1/72

Post by vacant »

This kit was first released I 1963. The model is from the boxing from that date.

I acquired it as part of a job lot. It had no decals and a few missing and broken parts, but nothing that caused too much tearing of hair.

I used decals from spares, though I'm not sure which kit they came from. Someone is bound to know so you can tell me. The result is that the exact markings may not be entirely accurate for the model, i.e. the markings are for a Mk IV whereas the kit is for a Mk III. The colour scheme I used may not be entirely accurate. It is intended to represent an aircraft from the Free French air force in June 1944. There seemed to be a lot of minor variation at the time and in the months around that date.

One on my "to do" list. That turned out fine.

I intend to do mine as one of the Blackbushe based D-Day smoke layers.

Great job on this one. I love planes with invasions stripes - just gets one's attention. I built two of these a couple of years ago - made one in USAAF colors, the other I converted into a P-70 night fighter. For an old mold, the kit goes together rather well. Excellent work vacant.

That's a lovely finish, indeed! Taking nothing away from your skills, I'd love to see Airfix releasing a new tool Boston to go with their Mitchell.

How you manage to get these very old kits to look so good is something that many of use would like to know. The finish is both interesting and extremely well done.

The Boston was a bit heavy on the rivet front so I lightly sanded them down. Any gaps are filled with filler and parts that don't quite fit are sanded or scraped until they do. Painting is by brush. So nothing special or difficult in any of it. There are far far better out there!

Nice job with an old kit. This model is just about the only one that I really remember building as a kid in the late 60's as it was the first model that I used paints on. When I was a kid you either bought a model plane...........or bought a model tank, you didn't waste precious pocket money on trivial things like paint or your mates would have a bigger army than you.

Nice work Vacant.

I had one of these in my stash a while back but decided to give it to my other half to build. Not sure I would've been able to do as good a job as you have, especially with those invasion stripes :)

The invasion stripes always present a dilemma. As we all know, most of them were quickly and crudely applied. Paint dripped everywhere. Painting around roundels and codes was usually crudely done. Painting them as I have done using Tamiya Tape , therefore produces an unrealistic effect. The dilemma is that painting them crudely just results in a model that looks badly painted, as least when I try to do it. Perhaps it's a matter of scale - in 1/72, perhaps straight lines are acceptable.

Fine choice of scheme and markings helps to distract from the kit's humble beginnings.

Terrific result!
