Monogram 1/72 F-105F Thunderchief
Latest completion; my first for a Facebook online group build.
Work starts in my workbench window here:
http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=471&start=1320
This has been in my stash for many years. Never built one of the Monogram 105s before, and even had one of the 1/48 versions for a while - but never built. Always been fond of the Monogram detail, regardless of the raised panel lines.
Originally I thought that this would be an opportunity for practising my NMF skills, but it turns out that the aircraft were painted in protective paint. Whew! So this oneis covered in Modelmaster and Testors silver, and even some Humbrol 27002 polished aluminium here and there.
Some kit decals were used and proved troublesome. I should have avoided them altogether. One unexpected and unwelcome surprise was that when the wing tanks were mounted they were toed-in a couple of degrees. So at a late stage I had to pull them off, patch up the paintwork as best I could and re-install them with better alignment. Watch out for that.
The instructions deliberately omitted mention of the ram air engine intakes on the rear fuselage, but I installed them. Turns out that late F models did have these installed.
But I did have to remove the fin and wingtip RWRs (inherited from the G model kit).
The weakest part of the kit is the undercarriage - I think that is so for all F-105 kits. And apart from the u/c legs, all the other struts and doors did not have positive attachment.
The fine Monogram details are crying out to be seen in the cockpit.
I added a couple of instruments to the internal windscreen frame. (Good references = OCD!)
Yikes! Should not have got so close to the windscreen in the photo below! But you can see my simulation of the canopy latches.
I am pretty pleased with the way this one turned out.
There is a Trumpeter 1/72 single-seater, and 1/48 wild weasel that I hope to get around to one day.
Thanks for looking,
David

I'd be pretty pleased with this one too David. Lovely work on the cockpit. These Monogram kits are a great canvas for a talented builder such as yourself.

That's really nice! I'm thinking of buying a die cast "silver" F-105 from Hobby Master for my collection. I would be very happy if it looked half as nice as your build.

Really like the silver finish - used but not abused! Love the look of these things, I think the pointy air-intakes are what does it.

Oh my goodness! What an incredible looking bird!
Beautiful natural finish. With the nice shading you did, it looks downright real at certain angles. The cockpit detail is fantastic. I like the RBF tags you added to the seats. Really well done!

That, sir, is a thing of beauty. The detail in the cockpit and the subtle weathering on the NMF is excellent.
